MORE 3RZ builds.......
Other than COB (whose runner kicks ass, btw) there doesn't seem to be alot of 3RZ builds on here. Is there anyone else who has pushed the little 4 banger?

I'm currently working on my 3rz. I purposely bought a 3rz because of the potential it has. In any case I don't have many modifications to the engine yet but I have some big plans in the near future. If I don't get distracted by my other project.

starting my header and intake install on sunday. Then replacing the entire exhaust. Using Lce's header and cat with a dynomax muffler and volant intake. I'm excited!

Ill most likely be installing some headers on mine this summer, I'd like to tune the air/fuel aswell. But everything else like a s/c and etc is just to deep for my pockets.

why dynomax muffler? same intake that i bought, and saving for the header and LCE intake now. let me know what a difference those mods make.

We are a rare breed, gents...
Check out Custom Tacos.com if you want to see some sweet 3RZ performance mods.
It's not quite my cup of tea since most of the members have minitruck tacomas that look silly, but they've all got crazy turbo setups to drool over. The 3RZ can run 300+ horsepower on stock bottom end!
I'm still in an early stage in my performance aspect of my build. Hopefully someday, my 4Runner will be the most powerful 4Runner (with original motor) on this board. A built 3RZ will slap a built 5VZ silly.

I have a base model 96 with a 3rz, rare breed indeed!
So far no mods planned engine wise, maybe a mini header. General maintenance and cleaning (new wires, plugs, filter etc..) sure makes it look nice.
I'd love to see what CAN be done with the engine.

I love my 3rz its been great to me over the past five years! There aren't many around especially here in VA and when I tell people its a 4 banger half the time they don't believe me. I haven't done alot performance wise to mine just headers, intake, and exhaust. After the lift and taller tires I went with 4:56 gears. Having a manual definetly helps too!

@ ralatkins. I chose the dynomax for a few reasons. I refuse to buy.magnaflow because of james[COB] experience. Flowmasters arent for 3rzs in my opinion. And dynomaxs are known for being stockish. Well the super turbo is. I just got a 14 inch. Im not really after sound anyway but ill keep you posted

Guys, guys, let's not all get our panties in a bunch here...
Ever heard of LC Engineering? Basically, the pioneers of performance Toyota motors. They sell accessories for the 5VZ and 3RZ. Every notice why the 5VZ isn't such a supported motor?
They also happen to make full on race blocks that can cost up to $20,000.
Fact is, LC took a 5VZ and loaded it with every bolt on upgrade that LC makes versus a similarly built 3RZ, and the 3RZ handled much better. It created more power (sorry, I don't know exact figures off the top of my head) and proved to be a stronger platform. I've seen a 3RZ running 980hp with a stock crankshaft. That is extremely impressive stuff.
5VZ motors can turn very impressive numbers, but with more work, more money, more time, and nitrous. A motor is not an easy thing to turn into a monster. It takes time, effort, and mostly lots of money. Most every component requires replacement. As far as tuned motors with 100% stock bottom end, the 5VZ cranked out about 400hp and the 3RZ ran almost 600hp.
On the 3RZ dyno run, LC Engineering kept having trouble keeping the tires from slipping. That truck runs 40 PSI sand drags like you wouldn't believe.
Regardless, our axles would snap way before we made any kind of power like that. I didn't mean that I was going to throw a small pulley and some meth injection in my truck and call it a day, my list for engine stuff alone is 4 pages long.
Keeping it basic, give me an ATI super damper to compensate for balance shaft removal, LCE Pro Camshaft Set, Heavy Duty Dual Valve Spring Set, Stainless Steel Lightweight Valves/Street Retainers/Hardened Keepers/Viton Valve Seals, Silicone Radiator Hose Kit, LCE Pro Motor Mounts, +4mm Big Bore Throttle Body, Flexalite Electric Fan Kit, LCE Adjustable Cam Gears, 10 PSI supercharger pulley, methanol injection kit, some heat wrapping, all without a even a single drop of nitrous...
I'll happily laugh at 4Runner V8's all day long.
Questions?
