Yes it can be done, Trails Less Traveled did a writeup on it. Involves tubbing the firewall.

I'm doing mine with just a 1" BL. The only reason I did that was to allow me to tuck the drivetrain more, other wise I wouldn't have done it at all.

Yah, I've read through that write-up several times. I just have always wondered why the 4Runner guys seem to choose BL over tubbing most of the time....??? I guess it's probably easier.

Im running 35's with no body lift. The Trails less Traveled article inspired me to not do a BL. I did not tub though, I hammered till everything cleared. Take the front strut out and bolt the tire on and move it up and down, side to side and hammer back where it rubs. It took me a little over an hour per side in the front. And I had to remove the inner kick panel and trim it to get it to fit properly. But the result is that I have no rubbing with the exception of on the frame behind the wheel and on the UCA but that will be fixed tomorrow as I will be installing Total Chaos UCA's. A body lift may be easier but it is not necessary.
I did the same process with both my 98 and my 99 RIP.

Thanks I've been fortunate to have 2 really nice runners. I love my black 98 but really miss that 99. What part of Colorado are you in. Lived in Ft Collins a while back and loved wheeling in the Rocky's

A lot has to do with the actual tires chosen. There is a lot of variance on overall height and width between tire brands and styles. The 315/75ra6 Mtr's I am running are actually true to size. They run exactly 35" on the truck and are exactly 12.5" wide. I have seen 315/75r16s that are 34.5" tall and about 11 3/4" wide. The width is a big factor. I know the coopers run small, and all of their sub brands seem to as well, like Micky thompson, **** cepek ect.
I am running a 1" BL no wheel spacers and i still rub the fire wall after hours of cutting and pounding on it with a sledge with a 3 ft handle. There is no way that you can pound the firewall back enough to clear the MTR's with no body lift. Tubbing is the only option, and honestly i figured i would smash t and try it out then if i need to tub i will just cut out the smashed metal. You have nothing to loose
I know my friend has a taco on 35's and no >body lift and I sit at the same height he does. The body lift lets me keep the suspension down and keep a real nice ride.
EDIT im also running 5.29 gears with the 35's to make it drivable. Its perfect with a 5spd and 5.29s. maybe a little high on the freeway, but i rarely drive it in the freeway and if I do i just keep it under 65 mph. Not only do i get better mpgs but less tickets!

It's true my MT MTZ are really a 34.5 or so they are a full 12+ wide and the are on a 17" rim. Those MTR are truly sweet. I just put a set of Cooper STT's on my wife's 4th gen and they measure pretty much 35 straight up. I also am not running any wheel spaces. It changes the arc that the wheel travels and pushes it back into the fender well. I also have the 5 speed and went 4.88's because I spend a fair amount of time on the freeway and for freeway I still think it is a little over geared. But I also slow down to 70 and am getting just over 16 on the freeway calculated by hand. I think 4.56's and dual cases would be ideal. LOL

Hey Bandit..... Since yours is similar to mine in the fact that you still have your sport flares do you happen to have any pics of how you modified your fenders?? Just looking for some ideas right now. I started a few rough cuts today but still have a ways to go.
|
Unfotunately, I didn't take any pics while cutting/pounding. But I did pretty much the same thing that everyone else does, and several others have documented it with pics. I did end up cutting a little off the sport flares too though (just behind the front tires only). Good luck.
