1997 4wd light flashing/beeping

Hello everyone, this is my first of many posts about our new to us 1997 4runner limited. On our test drive the previous owner said 4wd works great, hit the button while going 50-55, and it engaged and the dash light came on like it should. Today I was driving and figured I would do the same drill, nothing happened. On the freeway at 65mph, i tried again and the dash light began to flash and beep and would not shut off unless I took it out of 4wd. The lever I have is 4lo-n-4hi only. The lever is pulled back as far as I can get it. Thoughts? Broken?

Thanks in advance,
Tom

Does it work as it should when going slower, say 40mph?

65mph may be too fast for the 4runner to engage 4wd.

40mph, 4wd button depressed, and the dash light will not come on, making me think it isn't engaged.

I've read all other similar posts, some of them mention a faulty actuator, any ideas what I'm looking for?

Anybody have any thoughts on this? I really don't want to take my new runner to the dealership. I still have no 4wd light, Eeek!

Sitting in your driveway or parking spot, turn the key on so everything comes on but do not start the motor. Push the 4wd button and you should hear things happening under your runner. From there, you will need to find out if everything is working or only a few things are working correctly.

If you hear no sounds, youve got issues.

Key turned, engine off, 4wd button depressed I hear nothing. Zero, zilch, nada.

I'm really hoping to find out more regarding this and similar issues. I just procured a '97 4R and the 4x4 fails to engage. I, however, get a click happening on the actuator but transfer case does not actually engage.

I'm hoping it is just stiff from lack of use however, I am uncertain how to go about freeing it up so it works properly if indeed this is the problem. No light happens on the dashboard and as mentioned, a little click happens on the solonoid mounted on the transfer case but no 4WD happening.

Anyone have any hints on what to check for first ?
Thanks,
Terry

I followed the all data directions to test the 4wd. It was a pain, but basically you jump the switch and force it to engage into 4wd. After everything tested fine I put it back together and now i test it once a month.
