Looking to improve mpg.

You wanna go with a Denso sensor. You can buy them on Amazon or other sources online, like RockAuto. They are legit, they just don't say "TOYOTA DENSO" as they only say "Denso"

I have firsthand experience with both and they are just fine to use. Especially considering they're the oem unit for our trucks.

Typically the OEM Denso brand sensors give the best voltage readings and response rates to the ECU, not to mention they last a very long time. I would suspect the usual culprits if you've lost significant fuel mileage:

New air filter - $15
Clean Mass Air Flow sensor with carb cleaner (focus on the wires inside) - $5
New spark plugs if needed - $25
New spark plug wires - $40
Since you have a 97, a new front Oxygen sensor. They are roughly $50.
Check and fix any cracked hoses and vacuum leaks - $free-$10

Doing these maintenance items should greatly increase your mileage back to where it should be. At 12 MPG, you'll save all your money back and then some in less than a year, possibly in only a few months.

1998 TOYOTA 4RUNNER 3.4L V6 Oxygen (O2) Sensor | RockAuto - link to oxygen sensors for 96-98 4Runners. You'll want to choose the manual or automatic upstream sensor. You can also buy whatever other parts you'll need for very cheap from Rockauto.com such as the spark plugs and plug wires under the Ignition section.

Stay away from ebay and Amazon... way to much Chinese counterfeits parts on there. Buy from ledgit sources only. Rock Auto is a great source.
