How To Press Shock Bushings In and Out

So if you order Bilstein 5100 Tundra then you will need to push out the old bushing and push in a new (3/4") bushing into the shock. This applies to the rear shocks, the fronts don't need any bushings to be pressed in or out.

This is one way it can be done.

Tools Needed
3/4" deep well socket
Impact gun (or strong arms and a 1/2" ratchet)
32 mm socket (rent from AutoZone for FREE)
Pitman puller (rent from AutoZone for FREE)
Crescent wrench

Supplies Neeed
Shocks
3/4" bushings
1/2" x 5" carriage bolts and corresponding nuts with a few washers

Pushing Bushings Out
Get out Pitman puller.

Add a few washers to the end of the Pitman puller. This is done for two reasons. One, the shaft on the puller will fit into the bushing, jamming into the bushing. Two, the shaft isn't long enough, so you need the washers to push out the bushing.

Put on shock.

Crank down (your choice: man or machinery). Should look like this.

Keep cranking down until you have this out.

This is the end result.

Pressing Bushings In

This is where you will need the 1/2" carriage bolt.

Make a setup like this with the 3/4" rubber bushing.

Using crescent wrench tighten down.

This should be the end result. If you go too far then switch over to the other side.

Done!

Obviously this would be done another way, pressing the bushings out only using the 32mm nut. However, I have not tried this method. I am very sure it would work though.

And a h/t must go to rickashay and 004RunnerLtd for their help and bouncing ideas off them with 004 giving me the Pitman idea.

This applies to the rears only, correct? Front 5100s need no modification?

That is correct. Rears only need bushings pushed. From 1/2" to 3/4".

Great write-up! Glad that you got everything to work out.

So, this proves it.... you CAN press out the tundra bushings and hourglass ones WILL fit in their place! hahaha

Thanks guys!

For whatever reason I am not getting email notifications anymore for threads I am sundries to.

Eddy and Qyota, those look exactly right and they have the right 3/4" inner diameter. Really cheap too!

Thanks for the valuable write up!
I am still slightly confused with a few things,
1.In the pictures you are changing the bushings on Rear Tundra 5100's.
2.Does this need to be done to the front shocks as well? I am installing Front Tundra 5100's (f4 be5 6929 ho)?
3.Also I have been told the rear Tundra 5100's are too short for a 3 inch lift is this correct??

This does not need to be done with the fronts. They are already the right size.

The Tundra 5100's with a 3" lift are perfect. No worries. If you want some more travel you could look into Bilstein 5125's.

Got my rear 5100s and the 3/4" bushings today. Gonna do the bushing swap tomorrow. Interesting that the 3/4" bushings are all rubber, but the 1/2" ones have the metal sleeve.

EDIT: just did the bushing swap, went great! I just used the two sockets and the carriage bolt for removal and install. Actually use a dead blow hammer to get the new ones in most of the way.

Nice write up, tbst!
