Toyo VIP RS3000 Security system Trouble

I have a 1997 limited with a factory installed VIP RS3000 security system. I know this because i have the little 'Status Monitor'

And the correct ECU spot for 1997..

My only problem is, I ordered a key-less entry fob and I can't get it to work. It is the black fob (there are two the tan and the black)

I'm not sure of the difference between the two, but all I know is the directions that the key came with aren't working.. any suggestions?

Did you read this? From what I've heard it can be tricky, but there should be some helpful tips in there.

Programming Instructions for keyless entry remote?

There is a black and a grey fob, 4Runner's came with black fobs. That appears to be a grey fob. My key fob is definitely not that color so you've got the wrong fob. If you have the old fob you could swap the electronics.

Someone probably switched the casing. The casing of these remotes are known to break easily.

yes I did read solely the instruction part of that thread, I'll go back and see if there's any advice in there.

My Fob is pretty dark (could be the picture) but I'm aware of a tan colored fab
http://www.keyless-remotes.com/catal..._B_250x250.jpg

and a darker one than mine
http://forum.ih8mud.com/attachment.p...1&d=1314295145

But mine seems to be smack in the middle of those two colors... I'll check up on the Key-less entry instruction sticky

I'm thinking that picture of the tan fob is the grey fob you have but the picture was taken in very bad lighting. The grey fob was included in cars such as Camry's, Avalon's, etc. The darker one is the black one, those came on 4Runner's, Land Cruiser's, T100's, etc. I've never seen a tan RS3000 fob.

I was right.

Just wondering, but would you want to sell the casing of the gray remote? Or the entire remote if you'd prefer not to separate.

Hi. I'm new and can't yet start a new thread but my problem is related to the remote not working... I can find nothing online about the status monitor not working. I have a 97 TR4 Unlimited w/power locks and the factory security system w/ status monitor on the center consoI and ECU under the driver's seat. I programed a replacement remote and it worked fine for a while then suddenly stopped working. Now the status monitor no longer lights up, the remote will not work the locks (fresh battery, red light on fob works) and the doors no longer lock automatically after I close them and start the engine. I've tried the green reset button on the ECU and replaced the two fuses in the dash, but it just won't light up. Thinking maybe a short in the wiring. What else can I check, before having to take it to a mechanic?

For anyone reading, this was wrong. The black fob was used in various Toyotas from 96-97. In 1998 they switched over to the grey fob in the 4Runner and likely most other Toyotas.

from my understanding one color was for factory installed and the other was dealer installed.dont think it had anything to do with the year .but i could be wrong .

yes. I recently bought a grey remote for my '98 and programmed it very easily using these instructions: https://stuff.128keaton.com/rs3000/R...-Reprogram.pdf
