Engine loud metallic engine rattle @1800 rpm after sitting in traffic

I have a 1999 Limited V6 4x4 automatic with 122,000 miles.

Over the last year I have had an engine noise that has progressively gotten worse. After I sit in traffic for over 5-10 minutes depending on the temperature outside, hotter=faster, I get a bad engine rattle when accelerating at 1800-2000rpm, particularly uphill, like getting on a onramp to get on the interstate.

If I go on the interstate for a while and come off the interstate then the noise is gone, but in city traffic the noise only goes away only if I go over 2000 rpm for 15-30 seconds. If I start out driving on the interstate for over 15 minutes then I never seem to get the noise.

The noise goes up and down with the accelerator. I find that I am unable to reproduce the noise when parked in neutral and revving to 1800-2000 rpm, but I figure it is engine related because it is accelerator dependent.

Any ideas?

I'd like to give this post a bump. I have a 99 SR5 4x4 and have a very similar situation to what you are describing.

Someone mentioned it could be the lifters.. I frankly have no idea.

Any leads would be a big help.

Cheers,

Andrew

I had a similar noise. Try lubing the u-joints on the driveshaft.

Hi,
Check the exhaust header brackets that attach to the manifold flange.
Both mine were cracked and rusted through at the flange
