Doc's ZRV(Pic Heavy)

Hey guys. So, I've been working on the 4Runner, here's my previous post, (Been lurking, finally introducing "Riley"), but wanted to make a build thread for her.... There's going to be alot of pics, fair warning.....

Here she is, shortly after I got back from Afghanistan. Bought her while I was over there. The rims were painted with Rustolem Graphite rim paint...

By doc11 at 2012-03-04

The first "mod" I did was getting new tires. Falken Rocky Mountain 265/75/16. Next was adding a 1.5" body lift from 4Crawler, as well as taking the running boards off...

By doc11 at 2012-03-04

Next, was the 4wd conversion. I could be cruel and post up all the pics of that, but that wouldn't be nice. Besides, we all know the differences between the 2wd and 4wd stuff. If you want me to post the pics up, I can, all ya gotta do is ask....

After the 4wd conversion, I was lucky enough to find an individual on TTORA who was selling front and rear 3rd's with ARB air lockers and 4.88 gears, compressor, switches, and a hose kit, for $1975 shipped to my door. That same weekend, I picked up 3 manual hubs, and a manual transfer case.

Next, was a custom cross member for the transmission. Raised the trans up about 1.5", and is going to make the belly nice and flat.

By doc11 at 2012-07-04

Somewhere inbetween everything I added a set of Danahoe Racing coilovers. Found this pic of them before I put the wheels back on.

By doc11 at 2012-05-02

After the crossmember, the next thing was the manual hub conversion. Spent a long time trying to get new bearings pressed in, (wasn't going to pay 300+ at the stealership), and the ADD modification. The ADD modification was so simple and quick that I didn't have a chance to take pictures. All you have to do is take the actuator off the housing, put a hose clamp in so that the fork stays in the "engaged" position, put new sealant around the actuator housing, make sure the little sleeve is in the fork in the "engaged" position, and bolt it back up and torque her back to specs. I swapped out the 4.10 for the 4.88 while I was at it. And, well, we've all seen manual Hubs....

The hub conversion was the last big thing I did for a while. Just did some small stuff here and there, mostly cosmetic. Added some lights to the cargo area, did the full time power outlet mod, added some RealTree fabric to the dash; things like that. The one thing that I did that took a while was painted all the molding. The two tone color is nice, but those colors just werent working for me. Plus, when I take the molding off to line it, I wanted to get an idea of what it would look like.

Continued....

Now comes the really fun part. We all know what our 4Runners rear setup looks like, so I have no before pics. Just during. I'm all into doing a suspension lift, and doing it right. BUT, I wanted to do something different. Enter RuffStuff with thier 63" Chevy leaf spring conversion kit for 140 bucks. Add in the springs @60, and an 8.4 housing at another 60, and I'm sitting on a rear lift for ~250. The following pics are from the last few days.

Springs on top of housing, waiting to be positioned.

Still have some work to do. Need to weld on the perches, get the pinion angle right, get my driveshaft fixed, clean the springs and the axle, which I'm probably going to do now. I'll put up some more pics when I'm done.

Wow, thats an impressive and fully loaded post! Thats the kind of custom fab work Id like to do if I had the tools and shop. I want to do a watts linkage in the back at some point in the future. The leaf springs are a great idea. Will you have to run a panhard bar with that set up?

Really impressive. Im definately following your thread

Can some one post up two things for me?
1)STOCK ride height with 265/75/16 for a 1999 Limited;
2) if you have an aftermarket rear bumper, could you post up pics of the mounting locations? Hell, the front one too. Why not. Gonna have to fab up both anyway.....

Thank you gentlemen. She's still not done yet. I'm supposed to be out there working on her right now, but I had to fab some stuff up, and its hotter than two rats getting it on in a wool sock. Here's some more pics for your enjoyment. I have the pics of the stuff I just fabed, but thier too big for Imageshack. Guess I'll just have to go outside and use the phone.......

Better shot of how she sits now. This is without a driveshaft, gastank, or spare in the back. That should drop it down a little bit and make it sit somewhat level. Also, hopefully I can fab up a rear bumper some time soon, as well as a front. If not, just gonna have to crank up the DRCs....

I actually did it myself. I found some RealTree fabric in a local store, took the panel off, and wrapped it. I plan on doing more, I just need to get all this other stuff done first.

Nope. No more Panhard. I was honestly going to get a 1.2A from Sonoran, but it's just too damn expensive. Like I said before, I think I have 250 wrapped up in this set up.

Nice work!

I had wanted to do the 63" Chevy's in my last truck so bad. Cool to see someone actually do it. In fact I only know of a handful of guys with the Chevy springs in the 3rd gen.

That looks like a pretty steep angle for the rear driveshaft where it connects to the tranfer case especially if you also lifted the transmission 1.5"
Great job on the rear spring conversion but I always thought that coils had way more flex than leaf springs. Either way, good luck with it.

I need to wait for my brother to get back here so we can finish up the drive line. We're going to use the spring perches from RuffStuff, so we can angle the pinion up more toward the transfer case, cutting down on the angle. He's done the same thing to his Taco, and hasn't had any issues with it.

The one thing that kinda ticks me off, is that While I had the tank and everything out, I wanted to do the Ford swap. Found a tank and a sending unit for 100, but the douche never pulled it out!! So, I just had to put the Runner tank back in, and, lo-and behold, I'm going to have a problem with the front spring hanger...... FML...... I guess it's back to work for now, gotta swap the brakes and everything onto this axle and hope that it all works.....

Thanks man. That's the one thing I think EVERYONE does when they lift it. Forget to measure the stock height.

I measured it today, 41" to the rear well, 39" to the front. Can't wait to get her on some trails.....
