Introduction and Tire Question :hello:

I bought a 1996 4Runner Limited about a year ago and have been lurking on this site ever since. I'm from Coastal Mississippi but am going to school at Mississippi State University in north-east Mississippi for Industrial and Systems Engineering. So far the fact that my T4R is so old and has over 230000 miles on it has been giving me monthly crash courses in auto repair.

I'm about to have to replace the off-road tires the previous owner put on the truck. I am putting all-terrains on as replacement because I do mixed asphalt/off-road driving. My family has always run Goodyear Wranglers (most recently SR-A, I believe) on our twelve passenger vans because they provided the best traction and tread-life, but I have found the ones on the vans to be somewhat lacking in off-road traction. I was looking at putting Goodyear Duratracs on my 4Runner, but they are expensive. What are everyone's thoughts about what tires to put on?

I do asphalt/off-road but my off-road is mostly confined to sand or gravel roads because I don't know of any place I can go play. Oh, and the tire the previous owner put on are 285/75/16, so that is the replacement size I'm getting until I can afford new rims.

Introduction and Tire Question :hello:-4runner-jpg

As I bought it, I have done no mods yet. As soon as I can afford it though ...

Duratracs are a very popular tire for many 3rd gen 4Runner owners... I plan on getting some sometime, but for now, I LOVE my BFG Rugged Trails, been everywhere with them and they are awesome!

welcome to the site!

There are a few options you can do to save a bit of money. Kelly Safari TSRs are almost exactly like the Duratracs, but close to $40-45 cheaper per tire. Also, you can go down to a 265 75 16 and save a bit of cash. As long as you stick with a 16" tire, you'll be fine.
