4Runner tailgate into a Surf tailgate tire carrier

So i have always wanted a tire carrier for my runner but they always needed a bumper to have one but then i cam across the surf mod so i was thinking to do it up too i know it is duable cause Blcktpgsr has done it, looks pre simple except for welding the inner panels for the carrier so it is rugged and mounted strong is there anything i should be aware of or need to be done something more in depth like is the wireing harness the same so I can still roll the window up and down or if there is a build thread on how to do it othere than BLCKTPGSP build please let me know what should needs to be done and once i get all the parts would someone be able to help me out installing it in calagry

Any info would be awsome!!

The only plausible issue that you may run into is if your 4runners model and that of the Surfs are different....96-98 and 99-02's tailgate wiring harness and module are different.

If this is the case, then all you need to do is swap the entire wiring into the other and you're good to go. Then everything with regards to the tailgates functions will work just as they should.

I already did this once and that's how I know.

Since my runner is a 99 it will be better off to get a 99-02 hilux hatch so I don't have to mess with the wireing

Preferably if it's something in your control. I mean where i order, i'm only the recipient of what is available for bid in Japan..I could request but that might take a while to find in the junkyards.

Good luck!

Changing the wiring should be easy
I'd be more concerned with strengthening the 1/4 panel where the tire carrier mounts.

Subscribed.......

It's unforunate Toyota did not offer some type of Surf hatch tire carrier option for the North American market.

Having said that, I too would like to explore the ins/outs of completing this mod. Having a reliable source that has completed the project with cost, contact and install info is invaluable or as they say " Priceless "

Thank you inadvance for sharing your experience, Blcktpgsr

Best regards..........8sm

Guys I'm not sure what else I can add and describe to better explain the reinforcement process of the carrier on the quarter panel, but the detailed explanations to the best of my knowledge are all in my build thread.

Check out the long essay i quoted to FoneRunner as you scroll down. There are some photos as well on page 26.
It really isn't easy taking photos of the upper mount inside as the space is confined to get a good shot with a camera.
