Get a scangauge, it will read the factory temp gauge and does so much more.

Correct me if I'm wrong ripcord for saying this but doesn't the ultragauge do exactly the same thing as a scangauge with the exception being it doesn't read tranny temps? Since he has a 96 his scangauge can't read it either.

You might be better served with an ultraguage since it's cheaper but wait on ripcords response because I've never owned a scangauge.

This is true. Forgot about those.

Only 99 and up can read trans temp. And only scangauge can read trans temp. Ultragauge is 1/2 cost if SG.

There is no temp sensor for our trucks to read unless you have a 99-02

96-98 4runners don't have a temp sensor for the tranny. Therefore there is no signal sent to the ECM which is what the scanguage and ultraguage read.

that does suck but like the thread is labeled I am looking for water/coolant temp other than the stock one, not to read trans temp

Right, I was just stating the difference of what you're getting when you buy one of these.

Ultragauge is cheaper (atleast it used to be) so I was just trying to save you some money.

Ok so your saying both the ultra gauge and the scan gauge WILL read the coolant temp but neither of the two will read the trans temp on a 96-98 correct? ones just cheaper than the other
