Taco steering knuckle vs. 4Runner steering knuckle

I'm getting ready to convert my auto hubs to manual locking hubs.

The Taco knuckle I have doesn't have the ABS sensor and from what I've been told I'll be giving up ABS for the manual hubs. However Singtoe's thread on manual hub conversion shows a knuckle with an ABS sensor. Can I use the 4runner knuckle with all the Taco insides(seals, spacers, bearings, snap rings , etc) and taco axel hub?

The Taco knuckle casting has the same design as the knuckle with ABS so I don't see why it wouldn't work.

Yes, but it is a major PITA

Easier just to get rid of the crappy ABS

I'm thinking that either way it will be a PITA. I don't know how many miles were on the Taco they came from so I was going to do new bearings and oil seals. Which pressing everything from the knuckles is inevitable.

The consensus on this board seems to be that we are better off without our ABS. Also, if you take the spindles apart you should replace the wheel bearings while you are in there... more $$$.

Ryan, you can use the 4runner knuckle with all the Taco insides, but is a real PITA doing it yourself. Some one else = $$$. Ditching the ABS is the easiest way. If not, you must do what singtoe did.

I'm gonna take the easiest way in my manual hub conversion.

I'll be watching this thread!!

Cheers

I'll never pay someone else to do something that I can do. It may take some more time and a few four letter words but the satisfaction in the end of doing it myself and learning the breakdown of the assembly is fun and good to know.

Part of the reason I want to keep the 4runner knuckle is that I have the Light Racing ball joint insert that fits in the knuckle installed and the dumb UBJ puller that you can rent is garbage. I'd rather just go buy a 12 ton shop press.

I'll give it a couple days to devise a plan of attack.

The knuckle is the same between the taco and the runner.

Some Taco's even had ABS along with the manual hub so they are out there.

I wanted to keep the abs because my wife drives my 4runner once in awhile and if she runs into inclement weather, I would want her to have that option.

I have a 20t press but it was difficult to use because the 4runner hub is so big. I used a Craftsman gear puller and pushed the hub out of the spindle on the work bench. Worked great.

Side note.

Replace all of your seals include the orings in the manual hub.

I had to replace a cv axle this weekend and my hub did not have a drop of water in it. (last month, i took it though a pond and the hub was submerged)
