I plan on sleeping in my 4runner next time I go camping. I have heard that the windows need to be opened otherwise I will wake up soaking wet. Where can I get window screen/mesh? I plan on putting some on top of my sunroof and the side and rear window from the outside. Also, where can I get magnets (what type) to secure the window mesh on the outside? Thanks!

my buddie did this with his truck with a cap on it he bought screen for a screen door and built wood frames and it worked great at low cost you can buy the screen from lowes or home depo in rolls

Use thick wire like a coat hanger and make pop in screens either sewing or gluing
With magnets you want rare earth and lots of places have them wall mart , hobbyists stores, some hardware stores ect , i put small felt pads on them as not to scratch the paint if they slipped off the screen, the nice thing about just using magnets and screen on the outside is you can roll the Windows up and down depending if your hot or cold , as for waking up soaking ..depends on temps , but I've never woken up soaking or even wet, had moisture on the Windows but i wasn't wet, have fun man !

Bit of a pain and not ideal, but I used clear tubing slit down the center and then safety wired to RUBBER screen.

I pop the shorter sections inside the window rubber and it fits near perfect. Slept many of nights in my 4runner with my Dobie an no condensation.

Also helps in the morning when the sun comes and it provides some cool air movement and provides that extra bit of time to get out of bed.

I made something similar to this Magnetic bug screens | Magnetic mosquito screens for your car, truck, SUV or RV

It is fairly simple to make. Buy some bug screen material (preferably something that's plastic and bendable rather than metal), magnets and some cloth(something that won't absorb water from dew). Cut the screen to bigger than window size and cut the cloth into 2-3 inch strips to make a band around the screen. Sew the magnets into pockets so they are spread out a bit. One every 3-4 inches is probably ok. I made one for the sunroof and one for the rear window and it seemed to provide plenty of cooling. I would have made it out of one way netting so that you can only see through it one way if I did it again. Do the constant 12v mod so you can have some power in the back for a carlight. (Or use a flashlight).

i think i still like the magnets better, you get alot more for the money by going to home depot and making your own........

I made some using magnets and screen door mesh. Cost me about $15 and well worth it. I just traced the outline of the door around the rear windows and cut. Then used super glue (glue gun works better, but I don't have one) and glued magnetic strips to it. It worked perfect and can pack up small. Next time I'm going to add some felt like Izz to protect the paint. It was definitely worth it since I could have my windows down for ventilation during the night and day and not get any bugs in.

screw the bugs man, i use the "sunshade window mesh" stuff to keep the sun out of my hangover in the AM! lol

Good thread, I might have to try some of the setups mentioned.

This simple setup works well for me.

Home Depot has the screen and the magnets pictured. The magnets are powerful but fragile and they chip and fall apart fairly easily leaving magnetic dust stuck to the magnet. I wrap them up in clear tape which makes them robust and only slightly affects the magnetism which is still plenty strong.

Use these ones , they are nickel plated so won't chip , alternatively you can look for stronger pull magnets with plating online

That's a good price.

They're tougher but I've had plenty like that come apart, too. I keep some in the truck at all times along with some very thin mosquito netting so that I'm never caught unprepared. The setup in the picture is my "I'm now going camping" setup.
