Misfire #5

Hi I have a 98 4runner limited with 150k on the clock and just recently my 4runner started shuddering and shaking. It started friday and sat it threw a code. Apparently it is a misfire on #5. Well i have pretty new spark plugs and wires all oem because i was told runners are picky. I put them on about 6 months ago. So the guy at advanced said it is probably the coil pack so i replaced the coil pack and the spark plug and reset the code. It immediately drove better i had my power back no shudders and than after a day it started up again???? What next? What should i do? The check engine light is back on again.

Pull the CEL and see if it is the same cylinder misfiring.
Pull the plugs and look at them. compare the misfiring plug to another.
Your coil packs fire 2 cylinders each - (1-4) (3-6) (5-2) SO if you swap your #3 pack with your #5 pack and the misfire moves; you can find out if it is the pack that is faulty or if it is something farther down the line.
Sometimes it is an injector that is fouled, you can try seam foaming through the intake tract and see if that clears it out. Otherwise a new injector may be in order.
You should check vacuum and compression as well, these are easy tests that tell you a lot about your engine.
Good luck

Pull plug #5 and look at it--compare with any plug except #2 that is on same coil. If it is wet with gas, problem is definitely spark. If really clean, HG problem. If dry, check your injector both electrically for resistance and with a stethoscope.

Ok so swapped packs and it is still showing misfire #5. I checked spark plugs and they are dry and a little dirty. I couldnt see any coolant in there. So what would be the next approach? Would it be injector related? How do i check injector?

Is it misfiring all the time or is it conditional?
Use a multimeter to check the resistance between the leads on the injector and compare them to the values in the FSM. You do not need to pull the injector to check it. However; even if it is in spec it may not be working properly. I've seen quite a few threads end with the OP's replacing an injector and that clearing it up. Try doing some searches here on the forum for misfire.

It very well could be the injector. I had my #5 injector go bad about 3yrs ago.
Before you go and replace the injector which really isnt that hard since it is #5, I would make sure it's not the spark plug arching off the block, which can cause the conditional ruff driving. But if that was the case you should hear some tapping from it.

HG leaking?

Just to eliminate a few things do this, drive your car and let it cool down overnight and remove spark plug on the affected cylinder make sure the piston is on top when you do this check the next day and see if any coolant accumulating in the cylinder it just might be a small amount for now but it could get worst if driven continously. If cylinder is dry then move on to the next phase and swap out your coil packs and injectors to see if the misfire moves to a different cylinder.Goodluck.
