Confirm parts list - Tundra brake upgrade
Hey everyone,
I priced out ordering parts for the brake upgrade kit locally and was going to be paying over $750 to do the upgrade. This is a bit rich for me.
I checked out AutoZone.com just for the hell of it and it appears I can do it for $428 + taxes. I can then have it shipped to ShipHappens in Oreville and pick it up myself. (Only a 1.5 hour drive each way, might be a nice way to spend an afternoon with the wife.)
So - I've decided I'm going to do this, but would really appreciate some feedback on the parts before I order. Don't want to get there and find out I got something wrong.
I would be hugely grateful if someone could spend a minute and confirm the part numbers will fit on my 1998 4Runner SR5 V6 4x4. In return I will personally thank you, in a PM. lol.
Thanks!!
Luke

Yep I have. Just making sure I am not missing anything. Although I just noticed I had selected the 199mm and not the 231mm.

brake pads should come with both sides, so why the quantity of 2?

I ordered mine from Autozone too. Look around for a coupon code, I found one that for a Labor Day special that got me 15% and free shipping. After returning the cores, the total came in at about $280.

My understanding is they come with 2 "pads" not 2 "sets of pads" ... am I mistaken?
Edit: I was mistaken. Jeez, I must have been having an off moment when I put this list together. Really glad I made this post instead of just ordering, haha.

Thanks - I will see what I can find. I have to phone in my order though so they may not be open to coupons on the phone.

Thanks - I will. What are "Fenco" parts like? I've used Beck/Arnley but they are twice the price in this case.

IMO, just as good. The castings, unless I am mistaken, are OE parts that have been rebuilt.

Okay, thanks... Kind of jumping back and forth between the 199 and 231. I don't want to grind my wheels and the literature (various forum threads) are not clear. Some people's fit, others don't.

obviously you have not read everything in the thread as it is very clear regarding wheels in the thread. sorry if i sound like an ******* but i'm trying to help you out. if you can't take some constructive criticism then you don't belong on this forum.
Finally, Regarding my wheels:
I am running ProComp model 8069's. They are 16x8's and they have 4" backspacing. The equivalent offset is -11mm. These are one of the few aftermarket wheels that are known to fit over the 231mm calipers WITHOUT WHEEL SPACERS! I am trying to avoid spacers on this rig at all costs, so this made me very happy.
Thanks go out to 4-Ripcord for letting me do a test fit with my wheels on his rig before I layed out the cash!!! I know they worked Rip, but I was still a little nervous. Thanks again amigo!

Some info on which wheels will clear the 231mm Tundra Caliper WITHOUT spacers (Just using the quote format to make this stand out):
OEM Wheels that have been confirmed to fit over 231mm Calipers:
6-Spoke FJ Wheels (reference: 231mm Tundra Brake Swap COMPLETE!)
Base model 4Runner, 6 spoke steel wheels (reference: Wheel fitment with Tundra Brakes - YotaTech Forums)
OEM 4-Runner "5-Star" wheels.
OEM 4-Runner 5-Spoke "Flower" Wheels, found on '01-02 models.
OEM 4th Gen 4-Runner 6 Spoke 17" Wheels PIC

FZJ 80 Wheels will NOT fit over 231mm calipers, unless you run at least a 1/4" wheel spacer.
All of these wheels will clear the calipers, according to this thread >>> 16" Wheels and the Tundra Brake Swap - TTORA Forum
16x8 Pro Comp 1059
16" Procomp 8069
17" Procomp 8069
16" Wheeler's Type B
And all of these will clear according to this thread >>>> FJ Crusier Wheels with Tundra Brake Upgrade?? - Page 2 - YotaTech Forums
Ivan Stewart Wheels,
MT Classic
MT Classic II
Procomp 8069
Procomp 8023 in 16x8
Procomp 7089 17"

I can take constructive criticism all day - no problem at all. However ...
I actually did read the thread. Every page. Every post. (and all the other related posts I could find). If you read my post again you'll see that I did not ask "Will my tires work for ..." I simply said I was jumping back and forth between the two and was worried about a grinding issue. It may sound stupid (in fact it does sound completely stupid, but that's okay), but I am still trying to figure out just exactly which rims I am running - I don't know the difference between some of the rims and don't know if I have the "6 spoke" or the "3 split spoke" rims. They are 16" - I know that - and in some places people say "if you have 16" rims, they fit" and in other places they specify the number of spokes. Not only that - but half the damn threads on the subject are so old that the images are no longer viewable - so its difficult to compare. Also, some of the posts don't even show the rims themselves, just the steps to complete the mod.
Having run websites similar for over 15 years I know how f**king frustrating it is when someone asks questions that are already answered. So I didn't ask the damn question ... in fact I have a print-out right here of all the dimensions from BigFishAllDays original post and I was working on doing some measurements to figure it out for myself.
You have 650+ posts, have been active for 4 years and probably know your truck inside and out and could answer any questions about it without a hesitation. We are all not like you. Have some patience. If you want to help grow a community like this, then try actually being "constructive" yourself instead of making rude comments like "if you can't take some constructive criticism then you don't belong on this forum."
Next time read and understand the post your replying to and don't just assume the person is an idiot, a liar, or is lazy. I am none of those.

Let me help clear this up..."6 spoke" and "3 split spoke" refer to the same wheel style. Why 2 names?, it depends on how you look at the wheel. If yours is a '98 SR5 model, odds are they're 3 splits.

Chill out man. Leave the rage at the gym.
BTW, the wheel fitment issue is NOT very clear. I've seen 3 splits mounted on 231s without grinding.
