1999 4Runner studders when I accelerate

So my uncle let my cousin drive a 1999 4Runner SR5 V6, 185,000 into the ground and I want to know if its worth the time to bring it back to life.

The vehicle studders when you accelerate normal or hard. If you slowly press the gas pedal it accelerates fine. Its the same symptoms when the vehicle is driving or in neutral.

I took it to Autozone and the trouble code states P0171. So after reading the forum I cleaned the MAF sensor, but still no luck.

When were the spark plugs last changed? Try doing those and wires and see if it helps..cheap and easy job.

check spark plug wires too. My uncle's celica did the same thing (well it sounds like the same thing).

I'd address that code too, looks like there's much more to just cleaning the MAF per the posts that I found here.

I know plugs and wires have not been changed. I will try that next.
Should I stick with OEM or aftermarket?

Thanks everyone that did the trick. New spark plug wires, spark plugs and a new air intake hose. The one on the throttle body was dried up and fell apart when I took it off.

Here's my next problem. When I accelerate hard it seems to stay around 40 mph and it doesn't have that punch. If I accelerate normal it flies to 50, 60, etc.

I spoke too soon. The check engine light came back on.
Regular acceleration is good to go.
When I press the accelerator more than 50% or get over 50mph it doesn't stutter, but it doesn't have juice.

i'm sorry are you still getting the run lean code ? i saw where you cleaned the maf, but sometimes that doesn't do it, sometimes they just fail...this happened on my new truck, got teh lean code, cleaned the MAF,replaced, still no go, so i grabbed the MAF from another 4runner that i knew worked and dropped in there and problem solved!

I had the same problem as you about 3 months ago.

Brought it to my mechanic and he found a misfiring issue. I had the wires and spark plugs all replaced and she is running again just like before.

I am still getting the P0171 error code. Anyone know how much a new MAF sensor costs or should I get one from a junk yard.

new maf is $$$ i want to say around $250....

that said, i found it cheap here, not sure if it's legit or not....and won;t comment on it, but if you can get the OEM "DENSO" sensor for that price i'd order 2 of them....

Ouch. I just found a junkyard close to me. They have Lexus/Toyota MAFs for $35.
I will try one out today.

theizzardking Thank You very much! It was the MAF. Got one for $35 at the salvage yard and the Runner run perfect. I was getting ready to drop some coin on fuel injectors, O2 sensor, etc. Just need an oil change, timing belt and brakes done and I am good to go.
