I've run 85, 87 and 91 in my 4runner. I have never noticed any power or mpg differences. It doesn't ping on 85 so that is what I run 99% of the time.

I run 87. They offer 89 with the ethanol out here for cheaper but I don't trust ethanol. Not enough regulation on what percentage of ethanol your getting from the pump. That and ethanol, if left to sit will attract water.

The lower octane fuels (e.g., 85) are only valid for higher elevations because the air is thinner so you're technically not getting the same compression as you would at lower elevation, hence no pinging/pre-detonation. That being said, the only advantage you would ever get from a fuel above 87 octane is perhaps a cleaner fuel (by chance) or maybe lower amounts of ethanol mixed in... ethanol actually doesn't have the same efficiency as gasoline.
So, anyway, I'd go 87 if you live in IN...

87 most of the time. I'm told, unless the person on the pump before you bought 93, the first two gallons or so of your 93 purchase are going to be lower octane anyway because the lines are full of the cheaper gas the last guy used anyway. I've run higher octane in my other cars when called for but my 4R does fine on 87.

My actions exactly. But here is NC, gas comes 87, 89, Some Gas stations offer 91 and some off 93. Not sure how this works.

Have you tried 91 or 89 for that matter?
I have some customers that work at the oil terminals and they told me a little secrete. All the gas for NC comes from Texas through underground pipe line. They only pipe 3 fuels. Regular, Super and Diesel. Ethanol is railed in from the midwest via tanker cars and is blended at the terminal. Your local gas station mixes super and regular at the pump to offer Mid-grade gas.
In NC - all gas stations sell the same gas. From the same pipe line. The different store brands (Hess, Shell, Exxon, Mobil and etc) have their own additives which they add to the Tanker truck before shipping to the gas station.
I buy my gas from Walmart because it is usually 10 cents cheaper and it does not have all the additives in it.
Side note. With my 4.7 swap, I ran super (91 or 93 depending the pump) for the first 5,000 miles. Then I braved up and tried some regular and my 4runner gets the same milage as before. No knocking or pinging so this is all I run now.

This is not true if the pump has separate nozzles for each grade.
When I fill up my Truck, When the pump stops, I insert the nozzle back into the pump to turn it off, i then put the nozzle back into my tank and drain all the gas out of the hose. Once all the gas is drained from the hose, I put the nozzle back into the pump.
I usually get a couple of cups of Gasoline out of it.

Doesn't matter where you are, all gas in the US has at least 10% ethanol in it.
Aviation gas is ethanol free but has lead in it so not good for Cat equipped vehicles.

I used to run 93, but with the price increase over the years, I have scaled back to 89. I have found that the 4runner has run best with Sunoco 89 grade in it. The worst? BP by far.
For long commutes and trips, I still use 93. I seem to get more miles out of a tank than with either 89 or 87.
I don't understand why there is such a great price gap between 87 and the rest of the fuels grades now. It used to be about 10 cents, give or take a few pennies. Not now by far. If anyone has any input for such, I'd love to know.

Ive been running 89 lately. I hear pinging at higher RPMs on 87. Start up seems to take a few more cranks in the morning...
