Darkside GTI 2001 Sport Build Thread
I've wanted a 4Runner for a few years now and decided to finally bite the bullet. My current car is a VW R32 and while being awd, it has little ground clearance and I cannot take it off roads to go camping and such. I have been lurking around here the last week or so reading build threads and FAQ's and have learned a lot.
I have decided that I want to try and find a Thundercloud Grey Sport. There are two for sale local to me(Salt Lake City), I looked at one today and it was too beat up to even consider buying and the other I have not yet looked at because it has 240k miles on it. I am hoping to find one with less than 150k. There is one in Denver which I would be willing to travel to pick up, but at 13k it seems a bit high even though it has under 100k miles.
This is the car I am looking at. Do you think it is too high?
I have been looking at autotrader, craigslist, and ebay. Are there other classifieds that are often used?
Here are some pics of my R32, since this is my project car I probably won't do too much to the 4Runner besides a small lift and larger tires.

I paid right around $10k for my 2000 6 years ago with around 125k miles. Which would make that seem a little over priced, but at the same time after putting close to 100k on mine in those last 6 years, I wouldn't hesitate to spend $10k again for another 2000 sport with similar mileage today.
Nice looking VW and good shots ... I still don't get the whole stretched tire thing though lol

I may be in luck. It looks like there is a newly listed private party 02 Sport in Thundercloud. This car has 135k on it and is going for $9,800. This is more in my price range. I am going to try to get a hold of the guy today.
As for the stretched tires thing, I can understand that. I am still trying to convince myself to take the air ride off, put some nice coilovers back on and rally the beast. I mean it does put down over 500 to all 4 wheels.

Welcome to the site,
13k is imo way too high haha, you'll find better deals than that.
That's also a clean R32 you got. My bro has a 20AE and he sure does love that car of his. haha I'm also looking into getting into the euro game but it'll be a while before that happens haha!

I don't get the stretched tire thing either. But, are you staggered on that thing? Doesn't that F-up the Haldex?

You are safe up to a 4% difference in overall tire diameter. I am running 215/40 and 225/40, It's right around 1% different so there isn't much to worry about.
I just got a call back from the local guy that was selling the thunderclound 02 sport and it is already sold. It's looking like I am going to have to go out of state to pick one up and have it shipped if I am dead set on that color. There is a dealer with a silver 01 sport that I am going to go look at tonight. I like silver, but really like t-cloud.

If you can get that 2nd one to at or below 11k. I think it would be a great deal. (assuming its had the timing belt done.)
Oh and welcome to the site!

I don't think either one of them has had the timing belt done. I got the price down on the first one since I would have to do it myself.

The engine bay on the VW looks great. As for the rest of it... I can find no value or merit in degrading the function of a vehicle for the sake of "looks". That's the least harsh thing I can say.
As for what 4runner to buy- I'd recommend a 99 or 00 for the multi-mode (AWD capable) transfer case and lack of VSC, preferably with Factory Rear Locker

The air suspension has actually increased function for me. I had a set of KW V3 coilovers before and I always had to drive around speed bumps and be very careful with driveways. Now I can just air it up and be on my way. It still handles relatively well too, but VW's are far from race cars anyway.

lift, wheels/tires, remove running boards, and add some sliders. I really am not into the plate/tube bumpers on the front for some reason.
