Need input!! Engine shutting off

My engine shuts off on its own
Gently, often I only notice because of the running lights on my dash
Generally this happens while decelerating in low rpms
The check engine light yielded only that shift solenoid e is malfunctioning.
Is the solenoid causing my 4runner to shut off or just damaging performance? What are other possible causes?
98 sr5 3.4 liter. Looks like previous owners rarely maintained it

Sounds like you answered your question. Give it a tune up. Clean the carbon out of the engine with some seafoam, clean the fuel system (filter , clean injectors) change spark plugs, change timing belt, and replace a/f and o2 sensors.

Tranny flush might solve the sticking solenoid too but it will probably need to be serviced.

I appreciate the advice
I'm putting seafoam in with my gas today.
Over the next week I'm trying to get all of that done, I had to address safety issues such as new brakes and wheels first.
Hopefully just giving it the tlc will fix the issue.
Do you know how difficult it is to perform a tranny flush with the proper equipment? We have a fully equipped Hobby shop on base here.
Thank you for the input!

ICM to me is next on the list, as well as the Cam sensor.

I would start by making sure your battery terminal are clean and tight.

All gave excellent ideas here.

Low voltage can cause the engine to die if connection is dirty or oxidize
PCV value could cause a major vacuum leak those rough idle and stall.

Intermittent crank sensor and dirty engine grounds could be an issue.

Dirty Fuel filter or incorrect pressure at the fuel rail as well.

I am wondering if these rigs stall if you put the vehicle in neutral in the (autos) this wouldn't pertain to the manuals.

Failing alternator brushes could cause the low voltage issue was well as the connections themselves. Brushes mostly last 180 to 200K on the alternators and starters.

2006 Toyota V6 (Stalling Out)

I am having same issue. It's like somebody pulled the plug... and then plugged it back in a few seconds later. No codes come up afterwards. All power goes out. Radio, Dash etc. I spent a good amount of time reading forums and it seems like it could be dozens of reasons. I did clean the MAF and I took the Throttle Body out and cleaned it - it was very caked. I also removed battery terminals, inspected cables and cleaned - tested battery. So, I took for a test ride on interstate highway - which was nerve racking knowing at any second complete shut down could occur. It ran fine for several miles at various speeds, hills etc. I did notice better horsepower so I was feeling good that maybe I fixed it. But, then it reared it's ugly head twice on a 2 lane highway at 55mph. This time lasting longer than before but it came back "on" after about 15 seconds. Before that it was 4 to 6 seconds. If it was fuel pump I would assume it would generate some type of code and in the past on other vehicles I had with fuel pump issues it would stall and sputter at all speeds but it would not loose power to radio and other ac switch powered items. So, I am thinking something electrical and above my pay grade.

Did your 3r have an aftermarket alarm system that was removed?
If not, I would suspect you could have a electrical conection somewhere that intermittently disconnects due to heat, oxidation, physical damage, etc.
A fuel problem won't shut the radio, dash, etc off.
The shut down being intermittent is very hard to troubleshoot, even for a shop. Best bet is someone who knows known pattern fails could chime in and share their insight. Good luck.

I had this issue on another vehicle and a good thorough cleaning of the throttle body solved it. Just a suggestion if it hasn't been looked at yet.
