My Gear shifter doesn't rattle but it rocks back and forth, like "sways" with stopping and going. My 4wd shift knob vibrates like a mofo though.

My gear shifter does the same, sways back and forth but the whole time while I'm driving. I can feel it with my hand on the shifter like its "floating". But not my 4wd shifter, that one is pretty tight.

Same here. I get a lot of movement with the 4x4 shifter. My auto shifter when I drop it in to drive, sometimes will click back up to seat in drive like it goes a hair to far then I tap the shifter and it locks in. Not sure if that is a bushing issue or not but maybe. I probably should look into new bushings and a new trans case mount or perhaps a poly transfer case mount to help keep it solid. hmmm...

Mine has started to do the same thing you are describing above. If you look into enhancements for either shifter let me know what you find out.

alittle movement is normal, if its alot, you may need a new tranny/transfercase/front diff mount

you need to adjust this:

if/when you do make sure the car has the Ebrake on and the wheels are chocked so you dont run yourself over if you accidentally pop it into nuetral

Thanks for the help. Just did this and the wife (who drives it daily) loves it. It was one of her biggest complaints. I also adjusted the position of the arm that attaches the shifter to transmission. It got rid of the front to back play in the shifter.

My 3rd generation shifter is loose higher or above the bushings like half way up the handle. In the parts diagram from above it would appear to be 33631 and how it is threaded onto the handle. Anyone been in there to assist?

This should be stickied it will probably happen to all vehicles with time. And added to a list of common problems.

I hate to bring this back from the dead but adjust the linkage? How? Unscrew it while in park and sort of reset the position? I'm just not following. My shifter sways up and down over every bump in the road. Wondering if that's normal.

yeah, its a bolt than you loosen and move the rod back and forth. but the up and down is most likely:

there are two rods one on the top of the shifter plate, one on the bottom. So you will need 4 bushings.

part #33501G

you can order them here
SHIFT LEVER & RETAINER. Fits: TOYOTA | Village Toyota Parts

here is with the new bushings in

Ruiner,
Does a single order from that website contain the 4 necessary bushings or will I have to place 4 orders/quantity?
Thanks

I have a 1992 4runner AT and my floor shifter has the same issue of rattling around. It doesn't allow me to turn the off all the to remove it without jamming around that shift lever to get the key out. Will replacing the 4 shift bushings help that or do I have a linkage problem somewhere else?
