Check Engine Light while in Drive-Thru Lane

So maybe six months ago I'm in the drive-thru lane at In-n-Out Burger, and the check engine light on my 2002 4Runner comes on. It stayed on for a day or so and then turned off. I didn't think much about it.

Maybe a couple months later it happens again in the SAME drive-thru lane. I think to myself, "Well, that's a funny coincidence." Again it goes off after a day or so.

Last week it happened AGAIN, in the SAME drive-thru lane. Again it went off after a day or so, but now I'm thinking this is no longer a coincidence. The only other time that light has come on was after I went through the car wash. It has never happened otherwise, but it's happened maybe 3 out of the last 5 times I've been through that drive-thru.

What could be happening here? The drive-thru lane is rather enclosed--there isn't much room on either side between the restaurant and the building on the other side.

Next time you get the check engine light run the code and figure out what it is. That's a good starting point.

Perhaps it's the truck's way of telling you it doesn't like In-and-Out Burger? :P

Drive through, get the code on, and pull over as soon as you leave the lane and get the code... Like others have said, this would help...

I've got a $1 bill on a P0420 when you get around to sticking the code reader on it.

Yeah, I'll take the same bet. Happens to me every few months when I'm stuck in traffic or driving really slowly.

Thanks, fellas. If the light goes on again I might just spring for one of those scanners. Or I might just stay away from that drive-thru.

look into a launch CRecorder it plugs into your OBD connection and records your drive cycles and will catch what is going on at that moment, records up to 25 or more key cycles adn connects via USB to any windows based computer (software is free too).

If you have an Android phone or tablet get a bluetooth adapter off eBay and the Torque app. For about $50 you get LOTS more functionality than a cheap scanner.
