My beloved 2002 4Runner Sport - to sell or not to sell

With a baby on the way I just picked up a new 2012 Honda Pilot since I needed the third row seating.

I'm contemplating selling my beloved 2002 Toyota 4runner Sport Edition which I bought new and is in my opinion, the sexiest looking SUV ever made. =)

I've babied my SUV and just had the 80K mile service done. It currently has 79000 miles.

Besides the Sport Edition features, it has leather seats, and I put in an Alpine cd/mp3 player, bugshield, window and sunroof visors, tint everywhere including windshield strip, Toyota all weather mats, cargo tray, cargo cover, roof rack, tow, etc etc.

My dilemma is I can't really justify keeping another SUV around the house even though I've been trying to think of excuses. And my friend really wants to buy it and I threw a price of $10K out there for him.

Would love to hear your feedback on whether I should keep it or sell it. And what a reasonable price would be. Thank you !!

Original owner, low miles, and it's gorgeous!

I'm sorry to have to make this harder for you, but I suggest you should keep it. While the Honda may be a better car for around town, it's a different feeling than driving a 4Runner. I doubt that a Pilot can fill the spot in your heart so long occupied by that Sport Edition. It's in your blood.

If you're financially stable enough to keep it, it's more of a treat to yourself. It's got so much life left in it. If it is truly beloved, it will make driving it all that much more special. You could keep it in the driveway with a nice weatherproof cover. I remember when I was a kid, my dad daily drove a Toyota pickup and kept his old Mercedes under a cover in the driveway. To me, it was a privilege to be allowed to ride in it, driven only for special occasions. I guess since I liked cars so much as a kid, I thought it was really cool.

Good choice getting the Pilot though, I plan to have something else for the kids to ride in when the time comes. I will likely keep my 4Runner covered, and maybe my children will feel the same way I felt when I was a kid.

I agree 10000%
Unless I win the powerball...I would love to get another 02 Sport Edition bought off the original owner ;-)

Keep it and make it into an off road machine. Then, when the little guy or gal gets big enough to know WTF is going on, you guys can bond at your local ORV park. The wife gets some free time to watch sex and the city marathons, you get to have fun in the mud, the baby gets so tired having fun that it...well......sleeps like a baby. Win win for all. I'm a genius.

Gold

Congrats on the kid! I agree with above - and really what you have at this point, if nothing else, is a pile of gold that you could cash in whenever if you ever need the money. Original owner, low miles, well taken care of and awesome color - that would sell as soon as it was listed on a site like this. Give your wife the pilot and keep the 4runner - making your baby safe which ever way you travel! Co

That is a really nice truck! Way nicer than a pilot, but having 4 kids myself i understand the need for a third row so we have a yukon xl, but i love my 4runner, wish i could get a slightly newer one for a dd

Thanks guys! I knew I could count on everyone to try to convince me to keep it. LOL.

Unfortunately it's a 2WD so not much offroading with it. The wife has her own Jetta and has already stated the Pilot is way too big for her to drive.

That said, if I'm forced to sell it, what would be a reasonable price?

Thanks for all your comments so far!

The $10k you mentioned sounds reasonable considering the mileage and original ownership.

If that thing is already paid off(which it should), it has low mileage for its age, its in really good condition, why NOT keep it? Unless you see no need in keeping another vehicle on your insurance, and/or it'll never get used, I would keep it

It's a great looking 4Runner, but it being 2wd kinda makes it an easy decision for me. I would sale it and the honda and look into a newer 4th or 5th gen 4Runner WITH 4wd. Good luck.

Keep the Runner, swap in 4x4, armor it up, and your kid is safer than in any Pilot.

Where are you located? That plays a role in the price.
