Angry Cat gone

Different Scenario.Check engine lights came on.Took it to dealer they said Cat was bad.Wanted to charge me 1800 for new Cat and O2 sensor.I said Naa. Went to one muffler shop and told dude to replace from the Cat back thinking Cat would still be on there but new pipe muffler and resonator. I get it home and get under for a looksy and I got straight pipe from manifold to a flow master muffler and a pretty little chrome tip on the end?????What in the world??

Theft

this exact theft is happening all over KY as well, foreign vehicles are very popular to the experienced thieves, the 3rd gen 4runners are a preferred target because of the size and value of the cats. Scrap yards buy these upwards of 100.00 each, so a thief can make several hundred dollars in 1 night.

Trouble Codes....Cat replacement.....and if I catch one, can I run him over?

So, the CEL came on ....... OBD II gizmo tell me P0420. (Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold Bank I). How can I nail down that it's actually the CatCon before I spend $ on even a low-budget replacement? And....if the sniveling Cat thieves bring their game to Virginia can I run them over....by accident?

Bump to old thread, getting the p0420 code and not so great mpg, which I have searched.... but want to know the following....

A) Which 'off-brand' cat converter did you get?
B) How long has it been in trouble free service?
C) Are you happy not going OEM?
D) Do you have a dual cat setup? (specify if you have cal emissions)

thanks

A.) Full CAT from Oreilleys. I think it was Magnaflow. Works fine, does the job.
B.) 6 months, did have to replace 15 year old bank one o2 a few days ago.
C.) YES
D.) No, thank god.

Make sure you have the oreilley store card. I got enough money back from buying the CAT I stocked up on WIX filters.

Odds are your insurance company (depending on laws in your state) won't use OEM parts. If you choose to get OEM you may have to pay the difference unless you can somehow get the dealership to say that you can't use aftermarket for some reason. Good luck!

That sucks.

I have a good used Toyota cat sitting in my garage. I had it on Craig’s list for 100$. Pm me if your interested? Off a 2000 with 180k. For sure would give you the t4r member discount.

God damn meth heads. I’ve never had it happen to me, but this is a big problem where I live, in central California. Our county passed stringent recycling laws and I think that helped with the catalytic converter/copper wire thefts, but it still happens from time to time. Now they just go for stock wheels, especially the ones on newer Accord EXs. They can unload them easily, and make a quick $250-300 for the whole set. Sorry if this happened to anyone. It’s a real pain in the ass, and it’s expensive to replace.
