Perhaps the crank timing pulley tooth was broken when the pulley was removed. How did you get it off?

hmm ... i don't want to seem pessimistic, but i don't see how the broken tooth or the chip broken off the pulley would stop it from running.

I think that the purpose of the teeth is to provide crankshaft position info to the crankshaft position sensor. It is the tone ring for that sensor. If one of the teeth is broken, the signal from the CPS to the ECM would be momentarily incorrect. I suspect that this could have multiple symptoms ranging from engine running rough to stalling out. Maybe someone who knows for sure could comment. It is possible that the tone ring for the crankshaft could have been damaged like this if the timing pulley was levered off the shaft from behind.

I agree that the cracked harmonic balancer is likely not the cause of this issue although it could very well damage the drive belt.

Prying off the timing pulley certainly could break a tooth if not done carefully. It's been a month, but I seem to recall it coming off by hand without prying. Who knows.

My local dealership's master mechanic confirms having seen the same problem post-timing belt replacement, caused by a broken tooth on the timing pulley.

New crank timing pulley is on, belt all lined up. URD lightweight pulley should be here tomorrow!

depending on the type of tone ring, if it's bent the computer will not see the correct signature and pretty much be lost on where it is. Just saying, it doesn't have to be broken to be a problem.

Pulley is on, torqued it down and test started. Seems that was the ticket.

As I was torquing down the fan mounting bracket tonight, one of the studs stripped it's threads. Stuck waiting on parts again. Xmas is in the way, will probably add a few days to my order.

Got her all buttoned up today after work...took it to the store to pick up a few things. 6 weeks without my truck....man did i miss her.

I learned a whole lot about engines and repair during the process, no regrets. Thanks for all the suggestions along the way. Now, on to the next mod!

Glad to hear that it is back on the road.

I have never seen a URD pulley before; it looks quite nice.

Digging up a 7 year old post just to say that I had the same problem. Turns out I somehow broke a tooth off too. But not just any tooth, the exact same tooth as 1blink. Strange thing, I didn't pry it off, I used a puller to get it off, so i have no idea how I broke it.

Anyway, thanks for taking the time to figure it out for the rear of us. I ordered the new pulley and it started up like a champ... A week and a half later >:-( stupid Amazon

Sorta the same issue. Finished the belt and water pump install now the engine just turns over but will not fire up.

Also sorry for waking up a old post. If I need to move it let me know

Check that your crank position sensor connector and camshaft position sensor connector are connected and completely engaged (clicked in all the way). If they are, does your rpm gauge show anything while cranking?
