What is the best situation for AWD or 4hi

I have a 99 limited 4X4, and know i have the option for AWD, 4hi, or 4lo. On the sun visor is a basic outline but not too helpful. A couple questions for the pros, such as it says something about 60mph, as in not to drive in 4 wheel drive over 60 or not to engage it over 60? Also, how safe is it to truly engage the 4 wheel drive while moving?

I know it says the AWD function is best for like rainy situations for better tractions, but whats a good comparison to use either the 4 hi or AWD? I might be heading to the snow this winter and curious on the roads to put it in the 4hi and lock the center diff or AWD is better, thanks!

it answered some of them, so just pushing in the button on the side brings me to 4hi or AWD? Also, once I bring the lever back to the 4hi position, it automatically locks the center diff right?

High traction surface (pavement) = AWD

Low traction surface (dirt road) = 4hi/low

However if you were stuck on a snowy road or if it was really bad 4hi/lo would be appropriate.

Basically you do not want to be in 4hi unless the wheels are able to slip/spin to a degree.
