Spring is here. Rust treatment time...

Ok so I'm thinking about using POR15 and all on my frame. Lots of reading online about it. Searched the forum. I was wondering is there was a good how too thread? My main concern is do I actually have to strip off all the paint already on the frame? I just want to get this right the first time. I want to get the spray for the inside of the frame rails as well and see how much I can do to keep this things frame alive. I had an old 84 I had rust out so I'm a little paranoid.

You want to get some wire bushes and wire wheels for your drill and take off as much of the rust scale first. You can also use sandpaper and whatnot to take it down. The closer you can get to clean steel the longer your rust prevention will last.

OK, I was thinking about starting a thread on the same topic but since someone beat me to it...

Here are some of my ideas, let me know if anybody has any experience with any of it.

First water down the undercarriage with a product called Salt-Away. Looks like it'll last awhile.

Salt-Away Concentrate Kit with Mixing Unit - 32 fl oz (946 mL)

Amazon has it for $38 if you buy the liquid and spray hose separate.

I also read baking soda mixed with water will also neutralize rust.

---

Then I was going to apply this to the inside of the frame

Eastwood Internal Frame Coating w/Spray Nozzle

Internal Frame Coating w/Spray Nozzle | Eastwood

I ordered this from ebay for $15 a can w/ free shipping.

----

Then I have some Rust Bullet waiting for the rest.

I really love my 4runner and want it to last.

I'll post an update once I have time to apply this stuff.

I had the same idea of sand blasting the frame, treating it with POR15..

I checked a few videos on youtube and you pretty much get most of the rust off (doesn't have to be completely off) with a wirebrush or sand paper, wash it ,treat it with Marine Clean, wash it, apply metal ready and then apply POR 15

I used POR-15 on my entire undercarriage back in 2011. I just wire brushed everything the best I could, to remove the loose stuff. Then applied 2 coats of POR-15 by brushing it on. I didn't use the Metal Ready. It was a super messy, miserable job, but worth it in the end. It took 2 full weekends to get everything done.

It is holding up really well. There are a few small spots that need touch-up, but that's it.

When you wire brushed it did you strip off the paint on the frame or just paint over it?

The only paint that came off was that which was already flaking off because of rust underneath it. Most of the paint was still good, and I painted over it. It would be really difficult and time consuming to remove all the paint from the frame.

I did my whole undercarriage in por 15 , great stuff ! The key to a good finished product is the prep , marine clean , metal ready , then por15. Sand blasted my rear diff and painted it .

Yeah I just wanted to be sure cause I really don't want to strip all the paint off! Talk about a lot of work!

I took the rear out and sent it to a sandblasting shop. You can bring you truck to a shop and have them blast under the truck , it cheaper than you would think .

Well dropping the rear isn't going to make sense for me since It's my DD but sending to a shop for a day isn't a bad Idea. Hmmm I guess I'll have to call around see if anyone in town does that.

I looked at mine and knew it was going to take days...if not weeks. I've undercoated a vehicle before and knew how messy this stuff is. I'm getting older...I have more money than time. So, I bit the bullet and paid like $350 and had Line-X spray my truck. Did it two years ago...still looks new. Came with lifetime warranty, free touch-ups anytime (really nice after playing in the woods/rocks), took like 2-3 hours, and the best thing...all I had to do was watch!

Now did they just spray it or did they strip it down and then spray? You take the truck to them whole? My boss did his Jeep and he had one of his mechanics split the frame and body and I had to take the frame in. Living in the Chicagoland area I wanna do mine before next winter and my truck is my DD and don't feel like fighting with the wife to take her car. Mine has moderate to average rust.
