Engine / Transmission Shakes the entire car

1998 Toyota 4Runner with 210k miles.

I don't use the car as much recently (now that I have a 2013 model), and it seems to have deteriorated. IT starts up right away, but the entire car shakes in unison with the engine.

It pretty much shakes all the time ; interesting to observe that the shaking stops when:
  • In neutral, when idling with a little gas, around 1200+ RPM.
  • When driving 35+ MPH, it suddenly stops.
  • When the car is moving and then put into neutral -- note that the shaking comes back when the car comes to a stop.

Am I missing an basic fastener or did something more serious break. Note that the car has never had any major maintenance performed.

Are you sure it's not missing on one or more cylinders? Pull your spark plug wires one by one while it's running - if you pull one and it doesn't get worse, you've found a cylinder that isn't firing.

Good suggestions. I'll go test that.

The spark plug replacement was the trick. It turned out that the spark plug line has a broken off metal end that remained attached to the spark plug. Took a few minutes on getting that carefully removed, but after getting all the new lines and plugs in; everything ran smoothly.

Thanks!
