Runnning a stock alloy wheel in the stock spare location?
First of all, I've got Tundra 231 mm brakes. The stock steelie spare will not fit on the front in the event that I would get a flat tire. This summer I'll be upgrading my tires to 265/75s and was thinking about getting 5 tires instead of 4, then including the spare in with the rotation every 3000 miles or so. I did some looking today, and it can be done, but the steel plate that holds the wheel/tire up will need to be grinded down a bit. Kind of sketches me out, especially knowing that I'm going to be putting more weight on the pulley assembly with a bigger tire. That being said, I am curious if any of you have fit a matching alloy wheel in the stock spare location?
So has anyone done this? Sound like a good idea or is it a waste of money to buy 5 new tires?

I have a slightly deflated 33 stuffed in the stock location. I don't see why it wouldn't hold yours.

I can't answer your question about the alloy wheel, but....
I can assure you that a 265/75 will fit and the winch can handle the extra weight. I have Cooper Discoverer STTs which are much heavier than stock tires.

No I didn't try it. But according to BFAD's Tundra brake write up post #3 says the steel spare won't fit with the 13WL calipers.
To those of you with larger tires mounted in the stock location, do you just have them mounted to the steelie?

The weight should be no problem. I ran a 33x12.5 KM1 under the back of my 60, which had a spare tire holder of the same design as the one in our 3rd gens, just older and more rusty. I even used it as a "rubber skidplate" a few times with no problems

The 265 will fit under the truck. Easy.
The only part I'm concerned with is why would you want to put a STOCK ALLOY under the truck? These rims are already 14 years old, putting it under the truck is asking for something to scuff the shit out of it, or worse.
If you want to put a 265 indter the truck, have it mounted on the spare rim. That way it doesn't ruin the rim the way it would an alloy.
Just my .01.

My thoughts were to throw the spare in with the tire rotations. I don't want to rotate the tires with the stock steelie, that just looks bad. Maybe once the time comes to get new tires I'll look for a used 265 tire. I've been warned against running a smaller tire against the rest....

I learned a valuable lesson with the spare tire and super awesome rim that's provided. Needless to say, I immediately gots an OEM alloy off of ebay for $35. Put a 265/75 on it and made sure all is in good shape. I do not rotate the spare with my regular drivers (Duratracs), but I always check it. It's kind of like forgetting to lock your front door...you only do it once-

Omaha! I'm over in lincoln. Its not to often you see someone from NE.
Anyway, back to the spare tire. So you do indeed have a 265 with a stock alloy mounted in the spare location? How did you modify the bracket to fit the alloy?

I've tried it, and I'm 100% certain the stock steel spare will NOT clear the Tundra 231 calipers. I have not tested the stock spare for clearance on the 199's.

Trust what's in the thread, I verified it before posting. Also, I purchased a stock 4th gen alloy for my Wife's 4Runner and we're running it under the truck in the stock location w/no issues. The 4th gen wheel is a 17" wheel, with a 265/65r17 tire. Compared to a 265/70r16 (the size of the other 4) the 17 inch setup is within 1% in terms of size. I expect this to work perfectly as a spare w/the 231mm Tundra brake setup.

Also, this thread might help w/deciding whether or not a 265/75r16 will fit under the rig. Should be no problem at all.

Mine is on the stock steel spare wheel. Same as you, I plan to get a matching spare wheel so I can do 5 tire rotations.

You can put the spare in so that the outside of the wheel faces up to keep it from getting scuffed up. That would also eliminate problems (if there are any) with the winch bracket fitting the alloy wheel.
It's unlikely that your going to damage your spare. But, we all know that damage can occur on the trail. We accept that when we decide to go wheeling.

Run wheel spacers and save your self the head ache.
I put the tundra brakes but ran wheel spacers too so I never had any problems
I know this. If you put an Alloy wheel under a truck and let road salt sit on it for any duration, it will look like kaka.

I run a matching spare alloy with no modifications. It's a 265/70/17 on a tundra 17" wheel. I don't rotate it in- mostly because I am lazy. I take it out every now and again (couple times a year) and clean it up / check pressure.
You shouldn't have any issues...
