Smile Upgrade to 16" wheels? And wheel/tire question.

Sorry for a question I'm certain has been asked a thousand times, I'm a noob, so please forgive.

Just bought a '99 2WD that has the 15" alloys on it. I'm going to use it primarily for a daily driver but it will see some limited off-road duty, primarily just light mud and trail roads that aren't all that great - not gonna' try to go rock climbing or pass through swamps with it.

I really don't want to put a lift kit on the truck, but do want to put a brush guard on the nose, put on some lamps, and put a carry cage on the roof rack, so I need advise on the wheel/tire issue. I want something that can deliver good off-road gripping ability but still work as a road tire as well. Would prefer a meatier tread pattern, as we do have more soft ground and mud than normal down here in Louisiana.

From what I understand, the 31x10.5x15 is the biggest thing I can get on the stock rims without lifting the truck. Question is, would it be better to get a set of 16" five-spokes out of a salvage yard and if so, can I get the truck to stand a little taller with those without doing any suspension modifications? Is there a magic wheel/tire combo for the 16" wheel that can lift a stock suspension '99 4Runner higher off the ground as opposed to sticking with the 15" wheel and the aforementioned tires.

Looking to do other mods, K&N intake, brush guards, etc., so just wanting to make sure where it's best to spend the money. Thanks much and take care!

Well, in terms of tires, getting a mud tire for you, is out of the question. (In my opinion)
I think a good all-terrain tire is all you need. With all-terrain tires, their really not great at anything, but their good at everything. Also, if you want to take your truck off-road a little, then you will be aided with some tread, instead of a radial design. As well, an all-terrain tire will be friendly on the interstate, whereas a mud tire would impair your mileage, and there is no need for all that.

I would recommend:
1) Goodyear Wrangler Duratracs (Durable, light on truck, quieter)
2) Toyo Open Country A/T (Durable, somewhat aggressive A/T, quiet)
3) Mickey Thompson Baja MTZ Radials (More Durable, light on truck, quiet)
4) BFGoodrich KM2 A/T (quiet, most durable, not so light)

As for the wheels, I'm not sure. I have always had 16" five stars on this truck. I would assume you could fit 265-75R16s under there. But I do not know if it will lift you at all.

265-75R16s come to = 31.6"-10.4" R16

The easiest and most common lift here, is the runningboard lift
It's where you take your runningboards off, it gives the appearance of a higher 4Runner.. That's all I've done to my truck. People actually think I've lifted it.

You can fit a 32" tire on a stock truck with little to no rubbing. That can be accomplished by using 15" or 16" wheels. For a 15" wheel you'd have to go to a 32x11.50x15 tire. Because of the extra width, you may tend to rub a little more than if you went up to a 16" wheel with 265/75/16s.

As for tires, I'd say stick with ATs. The above mentioned are nice, and I'll also throw in the Falken Rocky Mountains. I've had them for 9 months or so and love them. No noise, good in rain/snow/anything but thick mud. Plus they come with a 50k warranty.
