Nice purchase, it sure does look pretty immaculate!
Yeah I needed new shocks which led to bigger tires which led to.... $5,000 later and lots of wheeling later....

keepin' the baby happy

Catching up, I'm a little behind... 48k miles in just over 6 years. $2757 in
upkeep, includes everything listed from the beginning of this thread but gas
and insurance.

Apologies for some sideways pictures.

6/6/14: finally had to put some front springs on it. 137k on the originals, they
finally just gave out. Moog 81090

8/18/14: Dayco WP271K1C timing belt kit. 38k on it now, still running strong.

11/7/17: Hankook DynaPro HT 265/70-16 $354 shipped.

9/9/18: OEM LBJ

9/26/18: Denso radiator

6/9/19: new floor mats. Not quite as plush as the originals.

6/19/19: hood strut kit from Leon. Nice! I hate the prop rod.

6/24/19: New KYBs. The Sensen shocks served a purpose- cheap buffers that
lasted six years. But they were driving me crazy towards the end, harsh and
felt every bump in the road.

The KYB struts needed the lower bushing drilled out to fit the bolt!

My cheap strut tool finally broke. That was briefly exciting, but no lasting
damage. Carried on with the Harbor Freight unit.

7/1/19: Valve cover gaskets were leaking so I had to finally take care of them. First
time I've seen inside the motor, and it looks pretty clean. Tiny bit of sludge...
The cable guides mostly held together, no repairs needed.

The intake can be pulled in one piece w/o separating the halves:

soon: Oil cooler is dripping a little. Parts on order...

Can you tell me where you sourced the hood struts?

Thanks

I just purchased my 2001 Limited 4runner and I'm glad to see yours is holding up so well! The previous owner took really great care of my car and I hope to do the same. I did take off my running boards first thing but I live with giants haha... I've got a few things planned (new suspension, wipers, etc.) but I've got to sell my old daily first.

Yeah, I don't know what took so long, except that it was just being reliable-
mostly.

I didn't write about the P1135 code that drove me nuts for a couple of months.
Took me so long because I was being a noodge about parts. Once I put in
Denso sensors, it cleared right up.

Pretty cool to see a recap of then vs. now, 6 years in the making. Once I get some time here my valve gaskets are gonna get the ol' switcheroo as well...

Looks like it was a leaking oil filter, or leaking at the oil filter. I just took it back
to NTB. They have a permanent oil change special, apparently- $24 out the door
for Valvoline dino.

Drippage looks to have stopped. Was not looking forward to an oil cooler r&r.

8/5/17: Finally replaced the stock radio with a cheap double-din off ebay.
$88 shipped, $15 3 yr warranty. Flawless so far.
So many options... I wanted
• cd/dvd
• navigation
• microSD slot for music
• touchscreen
• am/fm

I mainly use it for music. The low dash placement is annoying for gps, so I
use the TomTom. For the same reason, I also use an old phone for Torque,
when I need it.

Installation was easy. I repurposed the stock radio brackets and bought a
cheap ebay wiring adapter. Added a switch for the antenna, which still
actually works.

Looks very good - I've been thinking of ordering one of these units - any chance you can post the link to your wiring adapter?

Thanks in advance

Love the title of the thread. Looks like you been having fun. They are extremely reliable and just need a little TLC. Does that radio support backup cameras?

Thanks! After 20 years of screwing with expensive European orphans (mostly
Merkur Scorpios and Saabs), it's been a delight owning this thing. It's not
always a good thing when you know the names of all the parts guys you do
business with.

The HU does have camera hookups and a bunch more ins/outs. I can't find pics
of the back right now.
