Can someone please identify this component?

Hi all,
I was just tidying up some wiring and noticed this hanging down near the battery. Does anyone know what it is? and if it is just meant to be sitting there next to the battery ... it just has two wires attached to it which appear to maybe run back through the firewall (?)

Can someone please identify this component?-thing-jpg

thanks for the help

indeed! thanks for the detailed response. Interesting though ... I can't see any remains of an alarm system anywhere else in the vehicle. When I have some time I might follow the wires back and see where they lead to.

Cheers
