Check engine light - evap system small leak code

Hmmm, happens 2 days after filling up the tank. Same code every time. (0440(?)) saying evap system has small leak. Trac and stability system lights on too.

Replaced the gas cap already. Wifey says she has to hold the nozzle up while filling because there's something in the filler neck that makes the nozzle kick off if she sets the automatic lever on the nozzle. Says she's making the cap click several times when putting it on.

She does "fill it" full.

Any ideas why the code?

Could be a cracked or otherwise damaged charcoal canister. Had to replace mine, was cause of CEL.

Fill it until it clicks off the first time and don't add any more fuel. Topping off can ruin the charcoal canister. Thus the code.

Yeah, it's a 2002.

Is there something different in the filler neck that prevents the automatic nozzle from working properly?

I can't remember but there was a member on YT who tore into his. His solution was to get another one and was good to go.

It seems as if only the 2002 models are prone to this. I don't know if a 2001 and prior canister will work, but I don't think so.
