Doin' the Tundra Brake Swap - Autozone/Duralast
So the brakes on my '98 Runner are pretty worn, squeaking bad, and the rotors are warped. I decided to go ahead and do the Tundra brake swap to 199mm pads (I want them to fit my stock split 3-spoke rims, so decided against the 231mm pads).
I shopped around for parts, and decided on just getting everything from Autozone.com, and thought I got a pretty good deal on the following:
Duralast #C9689 calipers, drivers side $75.99 (+ $30 core)
Duralast #C9688 calipers, pass side $75.99 (+ $30 core)
Duralast #31267 rotors, 2x $53.99
Duralast Gold Cmax pads #DGC812 $54.99
Online coupon discount "COOL20" ($20 off per $100 spent, max discount $60) - $60
Free shipping
Final total w/tax and after returning the 4Runner cores will be $276.53.
I thought that was a pretty sweet deal. Anyone wanting to take advantage of that coupon for stuff from Autozone has until 7/30/13, so act fast!
Now let's hope the install goes smoothly...

Nice, you'll love the upgrade. I had Tundra 199's on my '97 Limited. I did the 231's on my '99. The 231's do fit the split spokes with just a little grinding of some extra material.
Install is straight forward. Good luck.

I went the total Auto Zone route back in 2011.
I highly recommend not using the Duralast Gold Cmax pads they will scour the rotors. The Duralast Gold Cmax pads have a lifetime warranty because the wear out the rotors.
Get some Akebono ceramic pads instead:

Compare the rotor thickness between the two. No comparison!

Is it customary to only do the rear or front brakes with this upgrade? Or do most do all 4 brakes? Or is this a dumb question haha...

I have to say for the upgrade and money, all your really getting with the 199's is bigger rotors. Your not really getting any more stopping power. The 13WE's are the same as the OEM Runner calipers. I do agree with the ceramics. I'm pretty sure the Toyota OEM pads are semi-metallic-

What do you mean by you "agree with the ceramics"? Not sure I understand what you would recommend for pads...

Bigger rotors = less brake fade. I've never had any trouble with fresh brakes stopping me on any truck I've owned, but I've definitely had trouble on several of them with brakes fading during long descents. A bigger rotor will soak up heat better and dissipate it faster, which will give you much better stopping power halfway down the canyon.

Don't use the CMAX. Go with the Duralast Gold pads instead. I used to work at AutoZone, and I know those pads are crap. I made the mistake of putting the CMAX pads on my GF's Jeep Cherokee a few years ago. She went to college on top of a mountain, and the CMAX pads faded horribly. It was outright dangerous. I swapped them out for the Duralast Gold pads and instantly the problem went away.
I used Duralast Gold pads on my 231mm upgrade.

I used EBC "Green" pads, and they are awesome. A bit expensive though.

Thanks for the comments everyone.
I think I will take back the Cmax pads and exchange them for the regular Duralast gold pads (#DG812). The regular pads are still ceramic, but I guess they are a different composition than the Cmax? They don't come with any hardware either, but I can buy the hardware separately if needed. The calipers may come with some of the hardware anyways, I will have to see.
Hey, and they're cheaper too ;)

So at lunch, for fun I stopped by the local Autozone and looked at the Duralast gold and gold cmax pads. To me, the pad material looked identical on each version. Although the Cmax are supposed to be "premium ceramic" whereas the gold are just "ceramic", according to website info. The shim backing material is a little different on each. The Cmax pads also come with some hardware and a packet of lube. Both pads have completely flat surfaces, no beveled edges.
I just got online with the Autozone chat person, and he said the composition of the pad material is the same on both the Cmax and regular Gold versions of these pads. So if this is true, I guess I can either avoid using these pads if I'm concerned and get something else, or just buy the gold pads and see how it goes. Heck, they are only $39!
