I would at least price them from the dealership, might not be as $$$ as you think. I bought a hard line from the center of the axle to the caliper on my Land Cruiser rear axle and it was only $14.00. Just a thought. On a personal note, I hate flaring tubing never seems to go my way.

Maybe in the states, but here in Canada dealers gouge us for parts. Last time I priced it out I think it was ~$80 per line.

I might drive down to Montana in the next few months so perhaps it's worth getting them there...

sorry to dig up an old post like this....

Has anyone done this recently? I talked to my local dealership, and they said the hard brake lines were NLA, and recommended I call Napa. They told me to bring 'em in and match 'em up. Anyone have it documented what size brake lines are needed?

thanks in advance.

Matt

3/16" diameter, M10 x 1.0, 45 degree Japanese flare. The OEM length that I measured was 10" front (both) and 34" rear driver's side, 35" rear passenger side. However, I used precut lines that were 12" front (both) and 30" rear (both). 30" was a bit tight in the rear but I got it to fit by not using all the OEM mounting points.

Awesome, thanks!! In the front on mine, there is an adapter/joiner that goes at a right angle on the frame - does it serve a purpose? Also NLA from the dealership, and I'm not sure mine is re-usable. I have to assume it does, but it would be a lot easier to just bend the line and have one piece. Will post a picture if I can figure it out.

I'm not sure what adapter you are talking about. I only replaced the hard lines from the rubber hose to the wheel end.

Hopefully this shows up....

http://i1116.photobucket.com/albums/...rakeAngle.jpeg

This is the part I'm talking about - it's an "L" Junction between two hard lines - this is passenger side wheel well - I was doing the starter and the line started to ooze from being moved. Pretty rusty, so I don't mind replacing it. Just wondering if I can remove that part and just do a bend in the brake line, or if it's serves some function.

Matt,
This looks like what you're looking for??
This elbow should still be available from Toyota, They just replaced it on my Tacoma when they did the frame replacement.. I could only assume that it is the same part from 4Runner to Tacoma??

I'd call Toyota with the part number from the picture?!

It looks to be just a union to make it easier to join two sections of line, but I would replace the part. I'm assuming you're replacing the upper section with the coiled line (for strain relief) as well? That might have to be an OEM part, no way to build that.

That is the part, pretty sure. I do think it's just a junction, but I would be afraid to leave it out, and not sure mine is reusable.

Just called the dealership... $18 to get it, hopefully they have it tomorrow. Only 12 left in the country.

Thanks all for the help!!

Yes, I am replacing that line and the other line going out of the connection. None of the hard lines were available from the dealer, so i'm going to be building them. Hadn't thought of that coil as a functional thing... guess I will duplicate it in my line.

Cool, would be interested in seeing pics when you're done. I guess you could bend the coil by wrapping your lines around a large dowel. Definitely don't leave it out...it's there for stress relief from vibration/temperature.

I will definitely get some pix posted as soon as I'm done.

Maybe a stupid question, but what is "Japanese flare"? I'm familiar with bubble, inverted & double.... not sure what "Japanese" flare is....

and do I need 37 pieces of it?

Digging this up because no one has answered this through the whole thread.
It's a double flare, never heard of Japanese flare before.
Use the die that fits into 3/16 line and compress it until it bottoms out on the yoke. Remove the die and compress the line in the yoke again.

Here is a how to link I found.
Know How Notes - How to Make a Double Flare Brake Line

Adding this because it super kool

Help

Apologies for digging up an old thread. Unfortunately, I just joined and it won't let me post a new thread until I get enough replies posted.

I need help figuring out how the front brake line mounts to what I think is the spindle. I bought the truck used and it's zip tied currently. I'd like to get new hardware and correct this.

I've got a picture below. If anyone has a clear picture of how this mounts, that would help a lot. I can't seem to find a straight on shot and I've search google pretty deeply.

There are unidentifiable clips that I can buy on the toyota parts websites, but none mention the hardware, if it's a bolt and nut or what.

Any help is very much appreciated.
