Question Largest fully inflated 16" spare tire that will fit in the stock spare location?

I was wondering what the largest 16" tire is that will fit under the truck in the stock spare location without cutting and modifying the frame? Also it needs to be capable of clearing the stock trailer hitch. I am told that 33's will fit deflated, but i am interested in knowing what size will fit fully inflated.

I know stock is 265/70/16(30.6"), so maybe a 265/75/16(31.6") or 275/70/16(31.2")...does anyone know for sure? Thanks in advance!

I think a 265/75/16 will fit. What size are you running now? If it's a 285 just deflate it and carry a compressor to air it back up if you ever need it.

my Silent Armor 265/75/16 fits with no trouble fully inflated. I'm wondering if a 285/75/16 would fit aired down some, anybody tried that?

My spare is a 265/75/16 and it's fully aired up. I still have an inch or so before it hits the hitch. You could maybe get a lower tread 285 spare with about 30 psi in it...so it still gives a little.

I have the stock trailer hitch and my spare is a Treadwright 265/75/16 Guard Dog. It won't fit. The tire measures a full 32"'s though, not 31.2 etc.. Even deflated I couldn't get it to fit without jamming it against the hitch and pan hard bar. What I'm getting at is it depends on your tire and your hitch.

That's going to depend on what tire it is, as well as tread depth, and a ton of other variables, you could have 2 tires that are the same size, but from different companies, and they could be different enough that one would fit and one wouldn't.

I have a 285/75/16 BFG that has 1/4 of the tread left on it as a spare in the stock location with a stock trailer hitch on as well. I know a full tread tire that size will not work. Hope that helps.

I also have a 285/75/16 spare with 7/32 tread underneath. It measures 32". Rubs on the panhard (track bar) when flexing.

Edit: I have an OEM hitch too.

I have a fairly new 285/75 16 Revo that fits with no issues.

Thanks for the replies guys. Im currently on 35's but was considering removing the 1.5" BL and dropping back down to a 33", but then was thinking it would be nice if i could fit a spare in the stock location all aired up and ready to go. Just afraid any smaller than 33" and i might be dissapointed.

For temporary get-home spares, not only do I hate dragging the tire, but I hate seeing that thing hang down...

A good little spare will get you out in a pinch - consider a 235/85 or a 255/85 'doughnut' spare.

I have a 285/75/16 in the spare location. It is well worn and down to around 10 PSI but it fits nicely. No interference with the panhard bar. I carry a small compressor with me.

Steve at Sonoran Steel has a method for cutting out the factory tire winch and putting in an earlier Toyota winch (chain instead of cable). His system allows a 285/75/16 to be stored, fully inflated, in a much higher position than the factory spare. Looks really nice and uses toyota parts.

Good point, i talked to Steve and he said if i cut out the crossmember and modify and reweld it that even a 35" will fit, just not sure i want to go through the hassle yet. I have a pretty cool tire carrier that i made that fits around the stock bumper im just not sure i like the spare back there as much as i thought i would.
