rear upper and lower arms bushings

I have a 1996 and I can't seem to find much info on replacement bushings. In fact I've found none at all.

I did read that the rear bushings are only replaceable sometime in or after the 1997 model year.

Is this true?

Is that true? I would have thought 96 and up because 95=gen II and 96=gen III. There is a thread here somewhere illustrating the year to year differences within the 3rd generation...

I have a 96 as well and their are a few quirks between our model and the rest of the 3rd gens.

I couldn't find anything on

I'm pretty sure the upper control arm bushing are not replaceable, you must do the whole arm. But the lower bushings are replaceable, the oem part number is 48702-35070. They're about $30 or so.

Thanks for the reply. I see new uppers on eBay.

I just need to go junking again and hope the 97 still has the rear housing hanging. I think I'll take the housing and all the rear arms. Then I can match things up.

I just looked on amazon and those bushings were 15 dollars a piece.

I'm getting ready to leave for the junkyard. If the junkyard butchers didn't torch the rears out if the two 4runners I know are there I should come home with the rear suspension arms and also a rear housing. (My housing was really rusty but I sandblasted all the nasty places and painted it with ZeroRust)

I am assuming you have already done so, but take a look at your uppers and lowers before you go.

I have a 1998 and pulled the uppers and lowers out of a 1997 at a junkyard because my bushings were toasted. I assumes they would be the same, but when I got them home and began pulling the ones out of my 1998, I noticed that they are not.

The 1997 uppers were slightly shorter than mine, and the lowers had some funky triangular piece on the end. I will get a picture of what I am talking about if you want, but suffice it to say that they did not work for me.

I got the arms off a 96. Same as mine. That funky wedge on the arm at the housing seems to be a limiter of some sorts. I didn't get the uppers. They looked horrible and new ones are 108 dollars for the pair on eBay. One lower was slightly bent. A 4x4 straitened it out. I'll measure their lengths to ensure they are the same length before I go too far. Also got the rear sway bar and locating bar.

In my ares 4runners of the 3gen and newer are knowwhere to be found in a junkyard. If they are in the boneyard they're totally stripped. The place had two. A 97 and a 96. The 97 is gone. Mush have been crushed.

Compatibility Info:
Part No. 48702-35070 fits the vehicle applications listed below:
ModelProduction DateEngineTransmissionTrimBodyDoor
4Runner 1997.08- 4cyl 2.7L MTM SR5B
4Runner 1997.08- 4cyl 2.7L ATM SR5B
4Runner 1997.08- 6cyl 3.4L MTM SR5V
4Runner 1997.08- 6cyl 3.4L ATM SR5V
4Runner 1997.08- 6cyl 3.4L ATM SR5B
4Runner 1997.08- 6cyl 3.4L ATM LULI

Its funny how contradicting the info for the rear control arm bushings are/is......

Some parts houses even say this bushing will fit the uppers too.

I don't know what some info about the bushings being captive on a 1996. The 4runner I got the lower arms off of was a late model 1996 or a 1997, and they were completely rubber and came out with a knife and hammer.

Thanks for posting up the info. I need to do this at some point. Strangely, the bushings on my 98 and the ones on the set of 97s that I got were completely different. Not sure how to describe them, but the two were certainly not interchangeable.

The OEM number a member posted up I bought on amazon. They are metal jacketed instead of all rubber but fit in the hole.

I wonder if the triangular piece is just a travel limiter and the shorter length does nothing more than change the pinion angle.

Just took a look at that part number. That is what mine look like now on the 1998. Not sure on the triangular piece, but it caused a funky clunking sound when I tried running them when the rear flexed in certain situations. I am sure it was not causing any harm, but I am not a fan of things that go bump unnecessarily.

I also had that some thougt about the upper arms changing the pinion angle. That is why I chose not to use them. I didn't want my pinion tilted down any more than necessary with the lift.
