have to replace diff...what mods?

The WeeRunner:

'97 2wd 4Runner,
2.7l 4 cylinder,
manual transmission
155,000 miles

So I downshifted from 5th to 2nd at ~70mph while cruising down the interstate (don't ask) and my diff is making some very unsettling noises. Needless to say it's going to cost me some $$. I rarely need 4wd as 99% of my driving is on the interstate, but I am an outdoorsman and there have been several instances where I have needed a bit more than this vehicle is currently capable of (driving on the beach, hairy mountain roads, etc.)

My Question:

Since I'm already paying to have the diff opened up and repaired, anything I want to add will just be the cost of parts. What should I do?

I'm thinking a limited slip diff...does anybody have any other suggestions??

Are you sure its the diff making noise?? I'd be worried about the engine (heads) from over-reving

I'll try to post a video, but yeah pretty darn sure. I only hear the noise when my foot is on the gas pedal. I take my foot off during a downshift or anytime and the engine sounds normal...it's only when I'm on the gas.

if you find that the rear diff needs a new carrier, there is absolutely no reason not to add a limited slip, or selectable locker. Might be a few extra bucks to an already expensive job, but a no-brainer
