steering wheel vibration from 40-60...sometimes
So im completely puzzled...I just got my tires balanced as I had a really bad vibration at about 65-70 and now its butter smooth after 60 but I get this vibration in the steering wheel from 40-60 but its not all the time, its about 50% of the time. Anyone have something like this happen to them?

Coming from the previous generation Toyota 4WD truck, which was equipped with a old-fashioned power steering gear box and link design including a steering damper, to the 3rd gen 4Runner with it's "sporty" rack and pinion system, I noticed the steering wheel is much ...shall we say...livelier.
It seems to depend heavily on the particular of the road surface. Of course, excess play in the various tie rod ends and tire/wheel irregularities could make it worse.
Try it on different road surfaces.
One nice thing: The steering radius and handling speed of the rack and pinion system is way better than the old box in the '91 truck.

I get a shimmy between 65 and 70 sometimes also. I live on gravel so I think it's from getting rocks in the tire tread making the wheel unbalanced. I just had new tires put on 1000 miles ago, and on the way home it was perfect. The next time out on the highway (after driving 6 miles on gravel) I had the shimmy.

you could have your tires rotated and see if it makes a difference to eliminate a bad tire.
I've had this problem since i bought my truck and havent found the issue.
Hopefully before summer, I'm replacing everything suspension-wise as well as steering.

I've had this issue for quite some time. Someone was telling me it could be an unbalanced driveshaft and that its generally a $60-$80 fix, but i just haven't had time to do anything about it.
Just a suggestion, wish i could be more helpful.

Check your rack&pinion mounting bushing. Energy Suspension makes a poly bushing kit for the 4runners/tacomas because the rubber bushing get weak and cause movement/vibration from the rack. Worn bushings could possibly cause vibration to the steering wheel. Just a thought.

Not at all the level of these other guys....but when I had this it was a stuck caliper. It was just starting....the advice was to drive the car and touch the rims...if it is hot that is your problem.

Also, check for play in your driveshaft if you haven't already. Wiggle it to see if there's any play in the joints. If there is, your u joints are the culprit, if not, you can start looking elsewhere.

If the shocks are still ok, you can get a replacement bushing and replace that one. You don't even really need a press, you could do it with sockets and a hammer.
I got replacements for my ironman's for $5 each after mine both blew.
BTW, when you reinstall them, don't give the bolt final torque until you have lowered it off the jack. Leave the bolt loose til you drop it, then torque it, that way you don't have pre-load in the bushing. Pre-load causes highly premature bushing failure.

Okay cool, do you think that could cause some shaking?
