Angry 2014 Portable Gas Can Thread (WTF California!)

As the title says this thread is about portable gas cans and the newish limitations on their construction and sale in the United States.

I will be using this gas can on my 3rd Gen so it needs to be low profile and not wider than a 3rd Gen's roof.

Background: about a year and a half ago I bought a 3 Gallon marine gas can that is low profile and this week I tried to buy another one and it is now illegal to buy in California. Because of these California restrictions the manufacturer stopped selling them in the United States entirely.

It seems that any can which vents or does not have a 2013 CARB approved spout is now illegal.

My open questions:
* what is a good low profile (height) portable 3,5,6,10 gallon gas can for sale in CA -- that does not leak!
* where to buy?

There are times to be prudent and proactive for the general good; it seems like CA takes that sound advice and runs amok with it in many ways.

For instance in Carmel it used to be against the law to eat ice cream in public (changed by Eastwood). But a woman can still be fined for wearing shoes with heels over 2" high (long) if they do not have a permit.

thats outrageous. Let the ladies have their high heels!

What they really should be outlawing is wearing sweatpants or pajamas in public!

Well, here goes, w/o getting toooo political, I have a CA approved craptacular spigot that, just like Al Gore had unintended consequences! It leaked or caused me to spill more gas than I had ever known possible, due to its 50 lb trigger, "push the spigot in to cam open the valve design."

The fix is to get medieval with some needle nose pliers on the back end of the spigot and re- um.... "locate" the butterfly-cam-open close "anti-leak" devise, leaving a prominent CA compliant lOoking can, then get a sharpie and blacken and old champagne cork to provide sealing... Some people might think the cork will re absorb gas expand and re champaign itself but this has worked on my outside stored lawn, mower gas can for over a year.
Thanks CA it seems my new hobby is now timing myself to find, fix, and make workarounds, hides, and cheats to your dumb laws.... Don't hate I said only the "dumb" laws!

I use these, Carb legal and they seem to not leak. I keep one in the cab of the 4runner and never smell gas and it never drips out. I just don't use the spigot it comes with, that thing is junk.
So I use these for fuel transfer.

I'm guessing if you are going to put it on its side on the roof rack it may leak, but not sure of that. they work setting upright tho.

You can modify the new gas cans. There are lots of videos on YouTube on how to do it. We shouldn't have to though. I always spill when filling the lawn mower.

Buy a NATO style jerry can on eBay... One of the green ones (thatbwaybyou can claim its water). Then purchase a super siphon. They are fantastic, I have a few of them. You'll never spill a drop of gas again, and you'll have a gas can that wil last forever!

I'm generally in favor of tree-hugging laws that help keep unnecessary chemicals out of out environment, but when the CARB-compliant fuel cans first came out a few years ago, I couldn't believe how insanely stupid and shoddy the design was. Before the ban, I got some Scepter MFC containers.
The plastic Scepter cans (MFC-military fuel container) I had leaked vapor(not liquid), so next I tried the old fashioned metal jerry cans. Extremely leak-free for about three years now. I use the matching nozzles, which are easy to extend with your choice of fuel tubing so you can stick the hose safely down the throat of the filler on the Toyota or any car.
All can be seen at the link:NATO 20 Liter Jerry Can - SET OF FOUR BTW, the cans can be purchased individually.

The reviews on that can are not spectacular.
