Idling problem 3.4 97

Idles below 600 after warm up? It seems low to me when it I am use to it hovering just over 1000 to 1200, I am worrying for no reason? Also there was a strange noise at start up, I have replaced the belts,
Could it be the alternator, battery fuel pump? It hasn't died on me.

Idle sounds about normal...at least that's where mine settles at when it's warm.
Regarding the noise...I'm having difficulty determining if it's coming from under the hood or the gas tank but it's not your battery...guaranteed.

If its the fuel pump it would stall or lose power on acceleration?

If you smash your foot to the floor after its fully warm and it kinda spudders and doesn't really want to go it may be your fuel pump. You can have it checked of check it yourself. Most auto parts stores loan out tools so you could loan a fuel pressure gage and see if its within spec

Also, a partially blocked fuel filter or water/ice in the gas could cause the same symptoms as outlined above.

And that's why I recommended pressure test. Which a blocked fuel filter could cause low psi but it should still be close to spec with a good pump.

I'm going to make a bet that the alternator belt is a little loose. The new belt has stretched now and slips a little when the alt is being worked...eg: right after start-up.
..
Any takers?
