What else to prepare for when doing timing belt

I'm gonna have my timing belt and water pump replaced soon because it's been about 100,000 miles since the last time. What else, if anything would you guys recommend having done while in there?

I have noticed a slight smell of burning oil at times and I found that my valve cover gasket is leaking. But what I'm not sure is whether it makes sense to replace that when I get the timing belt and water pump done?

so, valve cover gasket? coolant flush? any other seals? I just want to make sure I cover everything and that my mechanic can do it all while he is already in deep with the timing belt/water pump.

Thanks!

Thermostat and the fan belts. It might save you a little money to have the valve cover gaskets done at the same time, since he's under the hood anyway, but probably not too much since they don't overlap much in work.

Those 2 little hoses on the side of the block to the oil cooler thing because getting to them is a pain and less stuff on the engine would make the job a little easier.

Belts and hoses up front as needed since you're already paying for the r&r? T-stat if needed?

At second TB change (so 200k +/-) consider:

-cam and crank seals
-aux. drive belts
-thermostat
-both idlers
-hydraulic tensioner
-rad hoses (upper & lower)

Valve cover gaskets are pretty much a separate job.

Plugs and wires, depending on mileage on the current ones. If you change the coolant, you might want to look into an external cooler.

Just had the timing belt "package" done on our new to us (my sons) 2000 model, 180,000 mi. Records show it was last done at 73000 because of leaking water pump..anyway, this is what all was done, Toyota wanted $1200 my mechanic was $725....old belt looked pretty good, a little fraying on the edges.

Timing belt
Water pump
The 2 idler pulleys
Tensioner
Cam seals
Crank seal
Thermostat
And all other drive belts.

725 was a pretty good price for all that when you consider book time off that bid. That is about right for all that work that was done. Sounds like you have a good place you too the 4runner.

^x2

it may cost a little more but when I did the belt on my Tundra V8, I did all the above parts too.

While I agree that mileage wise to do these. It's not imperative to do during the timing belt. You can change plug wires and coolant anytime with ease. The idea to do all the other parts is because you are already that deep in and have all the necessary parts removed for access. It would suck to not replace a water pump or seal only to have it fail later and require just as much labor to get to as a timing belt.. cause labor translates to $$

I was just looking at miles, because although yhese are easy and aren't required during the TB change, it would suck to have a misfire in timbuktoo, when it could have been prevented along with the WP and TB.

FYI: This is the set I got (and I think others on here as well). Depending on the mechanic, they might use parts you supply, which could save you a couple big ones.

Oil Pump, too?

Why not replace the oil pump with that much mileage on it? Can that be done easily while doing the timing belt, or does the pan have to drop?

man... I just did mine and it cost about $250 in parts and about a half a day of my time to do. I just cant justify taking it to someone and paying them $500+. There are tons of write ups on how to do it, and besides sticking your wrench in hard to reach paces its pretty straight foreward and easy to do.
