Viair 88p...onboard or not?

Just got a 88p and trying to decide what to do with it. It has battery clamps but I dont really care for this option. I dont know a whole lot about electical systems ...just the very basics. Could I cut the clamps off and replace them with a cig lighter plug? Would it draw too much power? Or would the wire be too small in the truck to handle the resistance? I dont really want to permanently wire it into the truck. Any help would be appreciated. And a pic of compressor in question.

It has clamps for a reason, the Viair 85p has a lower duty cycle and output rating with a cig plug.

The 88p is a good little compressor, if you dont want battery clamps sell it and get another that is designed to pull less amps.

Ok. Thanks for the input. Blunt but makes sense. I got the 88p because of what it would do especially for bigger tires. I guess if my only option is keeping the clamps that is what I will do. What is your opinion for wiring it straight into the battery and mounting in the truck? Would running wires to the cargo area be too far resistance wise? Again thanks for any help

Depending on the current the motor draws, it may be too far of a run and reduce the air output, as well as be a hazard if the wires get too hot. I'm sure there are online calculators for calculating wire gauge with a specified run.

If you're going to go far enough to wire a compressor into your truck, you may want to look into getting a compressor with a %100 duty cycle. If you're using this to air up after wheeling or something, it'll take a long time. I air up my 33s from 15 psi with a 100% duty cycle viair pump (480C) and it still takes 15-20 minutes. If it's just for topping off or emergencies, completely disregard that.

Lol, yeah sorry.

There really aren't any reasonably priced compressors capable of filling a 33" in a reasonable amount of time. Really only this one and the hit or miss Superflow MV-50. My MV-50 just crapped out so ive done a lot of research on the 88p. I dont see it as being an issue, i think as long as you put it on the right size fuse, using wire at least as thick as it came with, that you wouldn't have any issues.

Very different price points, $250 vs. $60. The 88p has a Duty Cycle of 45% so its better than most bargain priced compressors.

I fully understand that, I wasn't trying to claim they are in the same price range. If the goal is to have a compressor to air up with when you go wheelin, the duty cycle is gonna have you waiting all day.

I'm looking for an OBA solution. What about the 380c? It's 100% duty cycle. Is there some requirement for mounting it, or can it just be carried and clamped on the battery when needed, like the 88p?

You can put battery clamps on any of the compressors they sell. It's just like mounting it in the truck and running wires, only temporary. Just make sure you size the wires appropriately for the compressor.

Thanks for the input fellas. Guess I should have known that the manufacturer knew what they were doing when they made their product. Haha

I have it mounted in the tool box of my 94 Toyota Pickup

My 4runner is my daily driver and the pickup is my crawler. Sorry I can't be of any help with the 4runner mounting. If I was to mount it in the runner, I definitely wouldn't mount it in the cab, the thing is pretty noisy.

Heh, yeah there may have been some thought into that. That's not to say you can't put thought into it and make it better though

Reviving an old post.

I got one of these VIAir 88p for christmas. Now I want to use it as an onboard air unit. Is this possible? Safe? The unit already comes with an in-line fuse.

I also am curious if it's possible to install the compressor under the hood.
Any suggestions?
