Normal Coolant/Trans temps?
Just wanted to find out what operating temps are considered normal in stop and go traffic.
Ambient outdoor temp - mid-80's
I am seeing about 201-203 on the coolant in stop and go, and between 190-201 on trans temp. Everything seems to operate fine. The coolant temp is real steady when it gets to its range, the transmission will vary between low 180's to mid/upper 190s for a few mins depending on how heavy the traffic is. Once I get moving again, trans temp drops down to around 192-194.
I am driving a 2001 T4r 6cyl. auto trans, 2wd...240k miles.
Thoughts?

wish i had temp guages
like you. I only have the factory rad temp, its always (night/day/summer/winter/stop/go) pointing a little less than 1/2 way up (like 8:45) after warming up (which is really fast). I'm sure someone else will give you degree specific temps.
Did you add the gauges or already there? But I'd say your temps are just FINE.

My ATF is usually between 160-180 if that helps. During hot days Ive seen it go up past 200, and I continued to drive, definitely a little worried though.

Thanks for the input - I am actually using Torque app on my android, to get real time readings. I think they are pretty accurate. I am just a bit worried about the trans temp....

Me too...hoping someone can provide a range of temps so I will know if there is an issue coming up...and I can address it before it becomes one.

Engine Temp: 193-198. I've seen as high as 204.
Transmission Temp: 140-170. My high was 210, on a steep curvy grade on HWY 101, north of Lincoln City.

I just ordered Timing Belt/Water Pump/Misc. Seals & Belts, as well as new Radiator and B&M 70264. I have no records of previous maintenance, although PO said major maintenance performed at 90K, so i'm going to get some piece of mind by getting those parts replaced in the coming weeks.

When I first got my runner, engine temp was usually 193-198, and ATF was 110-150. After a TB&WP at Toyota, engine is 198-208 and ATF is 110-145. Highest engine temp was 211 and highest ATF was 201 in the Adirondacks on the NY/Mass Pike.

With my stock trans cooler bypassed, and using only the B&M 70264, my trans temps are usually around 120° to 145° depending on ambient temps. Highest I've seen was around 200° while going up Signal Mountain, TN.

Interesting... I'll have to monitor the temps after my TB & WP is done next week. I wonder what's up with the increase? I've heard that the thermostat might need to be rotated?

Bingo, that's most likely it. Jiggle valve of the t-stat needs to be at the 6 o'clock position.

Yeah I need to move the valve. But from what I've read the slight increase in temps is no big deal, however if you're supercharged, it most definitely needs to be correct. I'm not super concerned, however when I replace the radiator and the coolant has been drained I'll adjust it correctly.
