Rear axle/Drum backing plate replacement

I finally received my axle today and the back plate on the drum is completely bent out of shape. I called the company I bought it from, and the guy said, "this is normal when axles get shipped." Are you kidding me? If this is normal, fix the way you ship them! I shouldn't be getting damaged items. He also said there is nothing he can do, if anything its through the shipping company.

So my question is, how difficult is it to replace the back plate? Do I have to pull the axle out? Any information would be great. Also, do think it would be a bad idea if i tried to bend it back into shape, its in pretty bad shape.

that didn't happen in shipping.

I would return it for a refund. its junk.

or submit a claim with the shipping company, but I don't believe that happened during shipping.

edit: yes to replace it, you have to press the bearing off. so add a bearing, seal and labor to that repair.

Thank you! I will give them another call tomorrow. I couldn't believe his response to my problem. Thanks again, wish me luck!

How did it arrive at your home? In a crate? How does the box/crate looks like? I hope this was not in that fedex truck collided on I-5 few days ago. Like "Nevada" said this is probably from a rear ended truck and they just sold it to you. Did you get to see the pictures of the part before you made the payment?
If you use paypal, file a claim or through credit card, you still can file a claim. If it is credit card payment, they won't pay it immediately so you can recover your money.

Before you trying to fix it, try to get a refund or a partial refund so you can get it fixed from elsewhere. You can save some money by doing it on your own. remove the brake drum and brake shoes and other parts inside the drum. You can use a hammer and a good big pliers to get it right.

Let us know how it goes.

It came wrapped on a pallet. I didn't get to see it before hand. The company said they were rebuilt and remanufactured OEM axles. So I don't see how they could ship such a damaged item. I am going to see if I can get some money from it so I can have it fixed. If someone pays for the repair on it, I will be a happy camper. I don't want to wait another 2+ weeks for another axle, so replacing it would suck.

Thanks for the input
