Frame Rust Prevention.

Hi guys, I just thought I would do a review/write up on a really cool frame rust preventer I just used on my 4runner's chassis.
First off
-My Runners frame was EXTREMELY rust free just some surface rust on the welds.
-Second the exterior surfaces of the chassis have been sanded, primed and painted with brush-on oil based tremclad. (to prevent further rust in the many years this truck will run for.)

So I thought I have just rust proofed the exterior of the chassis what about the interior? So I did some research and found this product.

The product is called "EASTWOOD INTERNAL FRAME COATING"
It has

•Tough phenolic resin penetrates, converts and encapsulates the rust on the internal surface
•Zinc phosphate seals it to prevent future corrosion
•24"-long tube with conical nozzle reaches in to spray coating in a radial pattern for complete coverage

here is a link to their website.
Eastwood Internal Frame Coating

I used 3 cans in total to do the whole frames interior so 3x$17.99
They also have a really cool exterior frame coating but I had already tremcladed so I didn't order it.

OK. Enough with the blabber on with the pictures!

hope you enjoy!

Good find.
Little bit of chemistry here. Zinc phosphate Zn3(PO4)2 is used to do the cathodic protection. Zinc or magnesium is what's used in ship hauls against corrosion. Zinc is more prone to oxidize then iron, therefore, zinc gets oxidize (corrosion) before the iron. This way the frame stays intact!

I blast water into the frame all the time. My front is open so it's easy access.

So this product will convert rust inside the frame to (?)

And you can spray on any rust ? Does it matter how bad the rust is ? Hard to know how much rust inside the frame

I'm interested in this.

I agree with the OP. This is a great product. Easy, even fun, to apply. My truck was up north in the rust belt for 15 years before I bought it. It did not have any frame rot but definitely had moderate surface rust on the frame. I used the Eastwood internal coating to get inside the frame and applied several coats of their rust converter to the outside of the frame. Obviously time will tell, but it seems to be holding up well. And the frame went from looking terrible to looking really good.

How much does it take to do the inside of your frame?

I used this product on my rust-free internal frame rails and applied POR to the exterior. I think I used three cans to do the entire frame-including the tubular cross pieces. I put it in thick.

Product was easy to use.

Per the website:

Tough phenolic resin penetrates, converts and encapsulates the rust on the internal surface
Zinc phosphate seals it to prevent future corrosion
24"-long tube with conical nozzle reaches in to spray coating in a radial pattern for complete coverage
Aerosol covers 10 sq. ft., qt. covers 50 sq. ft.
Fully cures in 24 hours

The key is surface rust. If you have penetrations your best bet is to repair the damage, treat it with POR and then coat it with the Eastwood.

And remember, you will need to apply it periodically down the road as this is what rusts off in place of your frame.

I know for sure I don't have penetration , if you mean like bad rot! My frame looks very clean. I took care of very very minor surface rust only on few spots. There is some rust I can see on th back of the frame where the hitch area mounts, you can kinda peak inside and see little bit. It's hard to tell how bad or if it's bad inside. But I have a feeling like it's clean. I tried feeling around with my fingers through the holes to try and feel any rust peeling.

I'm just curious what this little flat bar looking thing is sticking up out of my frame. That looks rusted ! Lol on both sides. it does not look like part of frame !!! Under the flat bar it looks good on the frame.

Someone's said it's for the hitch where it screws in.

You say use por15 Inside the frame then use the Eastwood product on top ?

Can you just get away with Eastwood by applying on rust ?

Yea I see it converts rust, so I'm guessing it's meant to be sprayed on rust !!!?
