Rust worth worrying about?

Hey guys - after 5 months of searching I found a 4runner that is everything I was looking for. Aka right year, mileage, color but has the rear axle rust. I sold my last 4runner due to excessive axle rust which rotted my spring mounts (3rd gen that I used to dunk my boat in the ocean) and was determined to find one with zero rust. Would this rust concern you? It is a 2001 sr5 with 100k miles in gunmetal grey, original owner. Let me know thanks

FYI I will not be using my new truck to dunk my boat

I wouldn't worry too much as long as the drain plug is functional. Is the frame solid? Looks fairly clean under there with spotty rust. How's that steely spare? Might recommend getting an alloy rim for that just in case.

if this is the truck : 2001 TOYOTA 4RUNNER LIMITED 4X4 GOOD CONDITION

I wouldn't be concerned because it was a family car and has street tires on it.

Also if the frame is in good shape, the rear axel is a replaceable part so if it rots just swap it out with another one from a JY that would also be a good time to do a lift and all the rear bushings! LOL

still it is a almost 14yo truck that isn't extremely rare (except the KM's) for close to 10K!! these trucks really keep their value well....

*One thing though GET RID of that UGLY BUSH BAR if you buy it.

happy hunting

That doesnt look bad at all really. I am in New York and salt is pretty terrible. If I were you I would wire brush all the areas, wipe it down and hit it with some nice black spray paint.... obviously you can do a little at a time.

Not at all but it's worth checking your frame near where the lower control arms attach to the frame. Well known area for 3rd gen rust.

Yeah, that doesn't look too bad, but you will definitely want to do something about it. When you get it, strip the rust off completely, and then use a good rust protective paint like POR-15 or the like. Regular spray paint will not last long I think.

Yeah I agree with the other posts, it isn't an immediate problem but rust only grows so you will have to do something about it soon. Use proper prep on the metal before coating it in a proper frame paint. I used spray paint and it worked for a little bit, but it is wearing off.
