Reviving This Topic

Hi All. I'm interested in swapping the climate controls with the head unit on my '01 Limited, as it'd be great to not have my floating head unit screen covering up the climate control buttons. I've come up with a few creative ideas, but ultimately none make as much sense as simply swapping the top and the bottom of the bezel.

Has anyone else finally come up with a borderline OEM-looking pre-fab bezel that would support this idea?

If not, any stereo installers (or ex-installers) hanging around who want to produce a custom piece, for the right price?

I would also be interested if anyone is interested in fabricating a solution.

Anyone know more of how this was done? I ran across this on a Yotanation product. Very similar to the one shown in this thread. Relocating the ducts but not the controls seems like the ideal way to do this.

You can get those vents off amazon and ebay, even found rectangular ones that at more OEM in appearance 2X Truck RV ATV Heat AC Air Exhaust Vent Dash Ventilation outlet Universal USA+ | eBay

I know some Pioneer "floating" heads allow you to remotely mount the main electronics, and a lot of newer headunits have shallow bodies because they don't have CD players.

What I'm wondering though is what all is behind the dash, how would a go about tapping off the ducts and routing them down to the new vents. How would I close off the original vents. What do I then need to get a head unit mounted up in the higher position. I've never really done any kind of fabrication before and I'm at least trying to get an idea of what all would be involved.

It's been years since I took my center dash off, but here's a pic from a Crutchfield article...

I'd ask Yotanation if they have more info on the duct relocation 3rd Gen (96-02) 4Runner Center Console Modular Accessory Mount
– Yota Nation

If I were to attempt it I'd probably remove the existing ducting between the heater box and vents then run new flexible tubing directly from the box to the new vents. I'd also have to relocate the hazard switch since it's between the original vents, not concerned about losing the original clock since practically every aftermarket headunit has a clock function.

Edit: forget this. I thought the 99 and up interior relocated the radio to the top. Seeing @’s interior radio picture I see I was wrong.

I found this article for a similar Tacoma setup:

Lot of work, but looks great!
