I'd be curious to see how/if anyone has pulled this off. I would think it would be pretty difficult because the HVAC controls for temperature and the vents are mechanical cable-driven, not electric.

Yeah I'd love to have the radio up high like i was in my old FJ-60.
But the re-engineering of the HVAC controls would be horrendous...for me, anyway.

It would be an extreme amount of work the cables would get I'm the way for heater controls

That all depends on the year. There's no cables on my 01 so it would be quite easy.

Yep ... my 97 has "manual style" cables and I don't see it could be easily done in a functional way.
Based on the posts above I guess later years have no cables and it wouldn't be that hard.

Even though newer models got knobs that can be turned, there is still a cable to do the operation.

It's just wires plugged into the control unit on my '01. No cables in the back of the controls on mine. I've been in there many times working on my led swap.
Edit: that said, they're pretty much cut to length and so you'd have to do some work in there to get them to reach down i think.

Searched for this and found this thread from a few years ago. Did anyone ever do this cause I really want to, I hate how low my radio deck is... I feel like this would be immensely beneficial

The depth is going to be a real problem. You can see how much that custom dash sticks out, and that's because there isn't as much depth in the upper half of the console as there is in the bottom.
This is going to be way more trouble than its worth for most people. You're going to have to fabricate a completely new trim panel for the center.
