Engine sputtering when attempting to pass...

My engine is sputtering, almost like a misfire, but feels more like a lean out, when the trans downshifts out of a corner or when attempting to pass someone. It only does it when im heavier on the throttle. If I let up a bit, the sputtering ceases. Could it be MAF? Or should I start with plugs/wires? Or any other opinions? No CEL by the way. And it just passed CA smog with flying colors.

I'd definitely do plugs/wires first. I just had a very similar issue and replaced plugs/wires and it solved the issue.

I'd start with the basics; plugs and wires.

Give it a tune up if you haven't done it recently with OEM parts, I'll say it again: OEM parts...this is important! I installed Bosch +4 plugs in my Tacoma one time and had all kinds of issues: stalling, loss of power, poor fuel economy, and maybe even a check engine light. I reinstalled the OEM plugs and all my problems went away.

Next I would investigate the fuel system. Have fuel pressure checked and/or replace fuel filter. If you run your fuel tank on empty a lot you've probably sucked up some debris and clogged it.

My 4runner has had a similar problem. At first it was throwing a #2 misfire CEL and I just fixed that w/ a new injector. It still has that sputtering, I have cleaned the throttle body and MAF which really improved things but it's still sputtering a bit. It just threw the "system too lean" code", and I think that it has a vacuum leak (some of the hoses were cracking when I replaced the injector). Definitely gonna do spark plugs soon but I wanted to start w/ the cheaper fixes and move on from there.
