cylinder problem

i recently had a problem with my 2001 4runner it had a cylinder 6 misfire so at about 50mph the car would start to stutter which felt like the transmission was slipping but i brought it to a garage and it turned out to be the coils so he replaced them and it fixed the problem for a while, now a couple weeks ago i started my 4runner in the cold and before it was fully heated up it sounded like it wanted to stall out and now at around 50mph its starting to misfire again (the coils where replaced last year). im not sure what the problem is anymore.

Sounds like a non OEM aftermarket (auto store) coils where installed and it has failed again. What parts where used?

to be completly honest im not sure all i know is that the mechanic replaced the coils for cylinder 6 and it fixed the problem for a year but now when the car is cold it runs like crap and the check engine light will pop on and the srv trac lights will come on if i drive the car without it completly heated up but once its fully heated up it will run fine except for the occasional misfire around 50mph but its not nearly as bad as before the coils where replaced im just worried that this is going to be the start of it getting bad again the car has 180,600 miles on it

If you had a mechanic do it most likely he used non OEM parts. These things dont like non oem electronics. Coils, alternators, starters usually fail 1-12 months after install. I would suggest having the coils tested, see if one if failing again. If so get some used oem coils if possible or buy oem new coils online and have them installed.

okay and is this why the car runs like crap when the engine is colduntil its completely heated up because this is a recent problem and has never been an issue before but now it seems to be. or is this problem not associated with the bad coils

It could be, or it could be another problem. I would start with what you know may be wrong. Your getting a check engine and same issue as before, maybe not all coils where replaced and another is failing. Im at over 240k miles on original coils. They fail but not often when they are oem.

I had the same problem with my previous 3rd gen. Replaced the wires with OEM wires and quality spark plugs, problem solved.

I find the ignition on these motors quite finicky
